A NEW HAMPSHIRE MARINE PATROL OFFICER IS REMINDING BOATERS NOT TO SIT ON THE SIDE, STERN OR BOW OF A MOVING POWERBOAT AFTER A 10-YEAR OLD ACTON, MASS. BOY WAS RUN OVER BY A BOAT SATURDAY AFTERNOON ON LAKE WINNIPESAUKEE.

SGT. JOSH DIRTH SAYS OFFICERS RESPONDED SHORTLY AFTER 4 P.M. AND FOUND THE VICTIM’S BOAT NEAR EAGLE ISLAND, WITH THE BOY’S LEGS WRAPPED IN TOWELS, WITH NOTICEABLE BLOOD LOSS. THE BOY AND HIS MOTHER WERE TAKEN TO A WAITING AMBULANCE AT THE THE WEIRS TOWN DOCKS.

DIRTH SAYS AN INVESTIGATION DETERMINED THE BOAT – WITH FOUR ADULTS AND FOUR CHILDREN ABOARD – HAD DRIFTED INTO SHALLOW WATER BETWEEN BEAR AND MARK ISLANDS AND EVERYONE HAD GOTTEN BACK INTO IT AFTER SWIMMING WHEN ITS OPERATOR – IDENTIFIED AS 70-YEAR-OLD ROBERT S. WOOD – ALSO OF ACTON – PUT IT INTO REVERSE.

SEVERAL LARGE WAKES THEN WASHED OVER THE TRANSOM, CAUSING THE 10-YEAR-OLD – WHO WAS SITTING ON A TRANSOM CUSHION – TO LOSE HIS BALANCE AND FALL INTO THE WATER BEHIND THE BOAT.

THE BOY WAS THEN RUN OVER BY THE BOAT’S PROPELLER, CAUSING MULTIPLE CUTS BELOW HIS LEFT KNEE. DIRTH SAYS AN ADULT JUMPED IN THE WATER TO HELP THE BOY, WHO IS LISTED IN STABLE CONDITION AT LAKES REGION GENERAL HOSPITAL AND WILL UNDERGO SURGERY.

FIREFIGHTERS FROM GILFORD AND LACONIA ASSISTED. DIRTH SAYS ALCOHOL AND DRUGS DO NOT APPEAR TO BE FACTORS IN THE INCIDENT.

HE CAUTIONS EVERYONE IN A BOAT SHOULD BE SEATED PROPERLY WHEN THE BOAT IS UNDERWAY.
