YEARS OF HARD WORK AND PERSEVERANCE BY PEOPLE AND ORGANIZATIONS HAS PAID OFF FOR THE TOWN OF ALBANY – AS THE TOWN FINALLY HAS ITS OWN FOREST.

SELECTMAN JACK ROSE SAYS IT TOOK THREE TOWN MEETINGS TO CONVINCE ENOUGH PEOPLE IN ALBANY TO VOTE FOR THE IDEA.

IT WAS ANNOUNCED MONDAY THAT JUST MORE THAN 300 ACRES OF LAND ON EITHER SIDE OF THE KANCAMAGUS HIGHWAY – ADJACENT TO THE WHITE MOUNTAIN NATIONAL FOREST – HAVE OFFICIALLY BEEN SOLD TO THE TOWN OF ALBANY, VIA THE TRUST FOR PUBLIC LAND.

ROSE CREDITS PORTLAND-MAINE BASED GREGG CAPOROSSI, PROJECT MANAGER FOR THE TRUST, FOR HIS DILIGENT WORK ON THE PROJECT FOR MORE THAN THREE YEARS.

ROB NADLER – OF THE ALBANY LAND GOVERNANCE BOARD – IN TURN PRAISES THE CITIZENS OF ALBANY FOR THEIR CONTINUED SUPPORT – AND THE KENNETT COMPANY – THE SELLER – FOR ITS CONTINUED PATIENCE AND ACCOMMODATION DURING FOUR YEARS OF DIFFICULT FUND RAISING.

THE TOTAL PURCHASE PRICE WAS $800,000.

ALBANY CONTRIBUTED $100,000 AND $75,000 FOR CAPOROSSI’S WORK. OTHER CONTRIBUTORS INCLUDE THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, THE NEW HAMPSHIRE LAND AND COMMUNITY HERITAGE INVESTMENT PROGRAM (LCHIP), THE OPEN SPACE INSTITUTE’S COMMUNITY FOREST FUND, THE NEW HAMPSHIRE CONSERVATION PLATE PROGRAM AND PRIVATE DONORS.

ROSE SAYS ALBANY MAY HAVE TO SPEND AN ADDITIONAL $60,000 DOLLARS ON THE PROJECT.

PROJECT SUPPORTERS INCLUDE EXECUTIVE COUNCILOR RAY BURTON, U.S. SENATORS JEANNE SHAHEEN AND KELLY AYOTTE, THE STATE’S CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION, THE UPPER SACO VALLEY LAND TRUST AND THE NEW HAMPSHIRE FISH AND GAME DEPARTMENT.

THE NEW FOREST WILL GENERATE REVENUE FOR ALBANY THROUGH SUSTAINABLE TIMBER HARVESTING, WHILE OFFERING PUBLIC ACCESS FOR RECREATION, INCLUDING MORE THAN A MILE OF FRONTAGE ON THE SWIFT RIVER. IT ALSO SETS ASIDE NEARLY 7 ACRES FOR A FUTURE ALBANY TOWN CENTER.

ROSE SAYS THERE’S GOOD SNOWSHOEING AVAILABLE IN THE FOREST RIGHT NOW AND PLANNING IS UNDERWAY FOR A WARM WEATHER TOWN PICNIC AND ANOTHER EVENT TO CELEBRATE AT TOWN HALL.
