by Christian Mower on November 5, 2011

A MAJOR HOLIDAY CHARITY IN THE MOUNT WASHINGTON VALLEY KICKS OFF MONDAY, NOVEMBER 7 WITH THE OPENING OF ELF HEADQUARTERS AT SETTLER’S CORNER IN NORTH CONWAY.

LAST YEAR ANGELS AND ELVES – AN ANNUAL GIFT DRIVE SPONSORED BY THE KIWANIS CLUB OF MOUNT WASHINGTON VALLEY – MADE SURE A RECORD NUMBER OF 740 NEEDY KIDS IN THE VALLEY GOT HOLIDAY PRESENTS.

HEAD ELF AND FORMER KIWANIS PRESIDENT DICK FICKE RUNS THE OPERATION WITH CO-DIRECTOR AND CURRENT VICE PRESIDENT MARIE LEE. FICKE SAYS HE EXPECTS AS MANY AS 800 CHILDREN WILL GET GIFTS THIS YEAR BECAUSE OF THE PROGRAM.

THE PROGRAM PROVIDES GIFTS FOR CHILDREN FROM SIX MONTHS OF AGE TO 17 YEARS OLD WHO LIVE IN THE MOUNT WASHINGTON VALLEY. AN APPLYING PARENT OR GUARDIAN MUST EXPLAIN THE NEED FOR A GIFT AND WHAT THE DIFFICULTY IS IN PROVIDING A GIFT – AND THE NAME OF THE SCHOOL THE CHILD ATTENDS.

PARENTS AND GUARDIANS CAN FILL OUT APPLICATION FORMS AT ELF HEADQUARTERS NEXT TO THE STAPLES STORE ON ROUTE 16 IN NORTH CONWAY.

HEADQUARTERS WILL NOW BE OPEN MONDAYS, WEDNESDAYS AND FRIDAYS NOON TO 6 P.M. THROUGH NOVEMBER 25TH, NOON TO SIX ON NOVEMBER 26TH AND EVERY DAY FROM 11 A.M. TO 6 P.M. FROM NOVEMBER 28TH UNTIL CLOSING DAY DECEMBER 17TH.

FICKE SAYS HE’S GRATEFUL FOR THE DONATIONS ALREADY PLEDGED OR RECEIVED FROM LOCAL RESTAURANTS AND MERCHANTS AND HE ENCOURAGES VALLEY BUSINESSES TO CONSIDER DONATING TO SPONSOR A CHILD.

FICKE HAS ENOUGH VOLUNTEERS FOR NOW BUT GIFT WRAPPERS WILL BE NEEDED IN A FEW WEEKS. KEY DATES TO REMEMBER – DECEMBER 2ND IS THE LAST DAY TO APPLY, DECEMBER 11TH THE LAST DAY TO BRING IN GIFTS AND SATURDAY DECEMBER 17TH THE LAST DAY TO PICK UP GIFTS.
