Bear attacks coop

Conway Police say no one was hurt Tuesday morning after a bear got into a chicken coop near Conway Lake.

Lt. Chris Perley says officers responded after a house painter on Brownfield Rd. in Center Conway reported he had heard screaming and half a dozen gun shots being fired at a nearby house.

Perley says responding officers interviewed some neighbors who said they had yelled and fired warning shots from a .22 caliber rifle after seeing a black bear knock down their chicken coop. Officers helped right the coop and provided information about the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department’s Bear Management Unit.

The chickens were unsettled but unhurt.

Perley wants to remind everyone it is bear season and they are out looking for food like garbage and birdfeed – anything that has been left out.

He asks people to be extra careful in taking precautions to avoid attracting or encountering a bear.
