The Transportation Director for Tri-County Community Action Program says one route of the Carroll County Blue Loon Bus Service is being suspended due to lack of riders.
Beverly Raymond says service will be suspended April 1, 2014 on the midday route that operates between McDonalds in West Ossipee to Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia.
She says there were only two riders for the quarter ending Dec. 31, 2013. It was hoped at least a dozen riders would ride the route regularly as the bus holds 16 people.
The route currently leaves West Ossipee at 9:30 a.m., arrives in Laconia an hour and a half later, and is back in West Ossipee at 1:20 p.m.
Raymond advises passengers to make other arrangements for transportation.
Towns around Carroll County are asked each year to contribute to the bus system that also offers door-to-door “on-demand” service.
At the deliberative meeting March 5, 2014 Conway voters considered a petitioned request for a contribution of $4,000 to the service, a contribution that is not recommended by the Board of Selectmen and the Municipal Budget Committee.
There was considerable discussion of the request, with one speaker saying he didn’t like the way it was presented to the budget committee and another person saying some people feel they already support the service through federal tax dollars. Others support making the contribution, saying the service provides a sense of independence and essential transportation for riders who are poor, elderly or sick.
Voters in Conway will vote on the request April 8, 2014.
