LONGTIME NEW HAMPSHIRE EXEC. COUNCILOR RAY BURTON SAYS HIS CANCER HAS RETURNED AND HE WON’T RUN FOR RE-ELECTION.

THE 74-YEAR-OLD ANNOUNCED SUNDAY HE WON’T RUN AGAIN FOR THE EXECUTIVE COUNCIL OR THE GRAFTON COUNTY COMMISSION. HE SAYS HE’S BEEN IN AND OUT OF THE HOSPITAL FOR SEVERAL DAYS AND IS HEADING TO HIS HOME IN BATH TO REST.

BURTON ANNOUNCED IN FEBRUARY HE HAD CURABLE KIDNEY CANCER AND WAS UNDERGOING CHEMOTHERAPY. AFTER HIS CANCER WENT INTO REMISSION, HE RESUMED HIS MEETING AND TRAVEL SCHEDULE.

BURTON WAS FIRST ELECTED TO HIS FIRST TERM IN 1977. AFTER A 2-YEAR ABSENCE, HE WAS RE-ELECTED IN 1981 AND HAS SERVED DISTRICT ONE IN NORTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE EVER SINCE.

ON HEARING THE NEWS, NEW HAMPSHIRE GOV. MAGGIE HASSAN RELEASED A STATEMENT PRAISING BURTON, SAYING HIS “STEADFAST DEDICATION TO THE PEOPLE AND COMMUNITIES OF THE NORTH COUNTRY AND HIS UNMATCHED PUBLIC SERVICE HAVE FOR DECADES STRENGTHENED THE ENTIRE STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE. I DEEPLY APPRECIATE HIS INVALUABLE KNOWLEDGE AND DEEP COMMITMENT TO THE GRANITE STATE.”

U.S. SENATOR KELLY AYOTTE SAYS SHE IS DEEPLY SADDENED BY BURTON’S ANNOUNCEMENT, SAYING “PUBLIC SERVICE IS A LABOR OF LOVE FOR COUNCILOR BURTON, WHO HAS ESTABLISHED AN UNMATCHED RECORD OF ACHIEVEMENT. WHEN I SERVED AS ATTORNEY GENERAL, I SAW COUNCILOR BURTON IN ACTION AND HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF WORKING WITH HIM ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. HE ALWAYS DID HIS HOMEWORK, ALWAYS ASKED TOUGH QUESTIONS, AND CARRIED IN HIS HEART THE BEST INTERESTS OF HIS DISTRICT AND OUR STATE.

I JOIN WITH HIS CONSTITUENTS AND PEOPLE THROUGHOUT NEW HAMPSHIRE IN EXPRESSING DEEP AND HEARTFELT THANKS FOR HIS EXTRAORDINARY SERVICE. I PRAY THAT RAY WILL FIND STRENGTH AND PEACE DURING THIS DIFFICULT TIME.”
