UPDATE: A SPOKESPERSON FOR MAINE MEDICAL CENTER SAID EUGENE RAPPE WAS IN CRITICAL CONDITION FRIDAY MORNING.

CONWAY POLICE SAY A 64-YEAR-OLD CENTER CONWAY MAN WAS SERIOUSLY INJURED WEDNESDAY NIGHT AFTER THE PICKUP TRUCK HE WAS DRIVING ROLLED OVER DURING WHAT APPEARS TO BE AN INCIDENT OF ROAD RAGE.

LT. CHRIS PERLEY SAYS EUGENE RAPPE OF MUDGETT RD. WAS DRIVING A 2003 FORD F-250 PICKUP ON EAST MAIN ST. TOWARD CONWAY VILLAGE AROUND 6 P.M. AND WAS TRYING TO CATCH UP WITH A DRIVER THAT HAD PASSED HIM AT THE TRAFFIC LIGHTS WHEN HE WENT OFF THE ROAD JUST PAST ABENAKI DR.

RAPPE THEN OVER CORRECTED AND WENT INTO A CRITICAL SPEED YAW ACROSS THE ROAD ONTO A GRASS AREA, THEN HIT AN EMBANKMENT THAT LAUNCHED THE TRUCK INTO THE AIR AND ROLLED IT SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE IT LANDED NEAR THE WOOD LINE. RAPPE WAS EJECTED.)

HIS PASSENGERS – IDENTIFIED AS HIS 58-YEAR-OLD WIFE JUDY RAPPE – WHO WAS WEARING A SEATBELT – AND AN 8-YEAR-OLD GIRL WHO WAS BELTED INTO A BOOSTER SEAT – SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES.

THE PICKUP WAS TOTALED AND HAD TO BE TOWED FROM THE SCENE.

CONWAY FIRE RESCUE AND AMBULANCE RESPONDED AND ALL THREE PEOPLE WERE TAKEN TO MEMORIAL HOSPITAL IN NORTH CONWAY.

PERLEY EXTENDS THE CONCERNS OF HIS DEPARTMENT TO EVERYONE INVOLVED BUT ADVISES DRIVERS TO CALL POLICE DURING INCIDENTS OF ROAD RAGE AND NOT TRY TO CATCH UP AT A HIGH SPEED THAT’S NOT PRUDENT.

PERLEY SAYS THE ROAD WAS CLEAR AND DRY AT THE TIME OF THE CRASH.

A PHONE CALL TO MEMORIAL HOSPITAL REQUESTING THE CONDITION OF EUGENE RAPPE WAS NOT RETURNED BY AIR TIME.
