The coordinator of last week’s Saco River Conference at Fryeburg Academy in Maine says he’s reviewing comments he got from participants.
Jeff Stern is an environmental consultant to the Oxford County (Maine) Soil and Water Conservation District.
He says he was pleased with the turnout of more than 80 people at the conference Wednesday.
Stern says one of the goals was just to get people together from New Hampshire and Maine to network and talk about the Saco – and encourage better communication. He says most attendees indicated a desire to have similar conferences on a regular basis.
Conway Emergency Management Director/Conway Fire Chief Steve Solomon – who gave a presentation about emergency efforts to deal with flooding caused by the remnants of Tropical Storm Irene – was one of several speakers.
Others talked about drinking water quality, riverbank stabilization and erosion, recreation impacts and invasive species – and other challenges facing the Saco River Watershed.
One combined session later in the conference focused on the possibility of creating an interstate working group.
