CONTEST CHALLENGES ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT DISABILITIES

by Gair on October 17, 2013

RESIDENTS OF NEW HAMPSHIRE ARE INVITED TO CHALLENGE ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES BY ENTERING A VIDEO CONTEST.

REBECCA McKEOWN IS A SPOKESPERSON FOR THE NEW HAMPSHIRE COUNCIL ON DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES IN CONCORD.

THE COUNCIL IS A FEDERALLY FUNDED AGENCY THAT SUPPORTS PUBLIC POLICIES AND INITIATIVES THAT REMOVE BARRIERS AND PROMOTE LIFE OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH EDUCATION, ADVOCACY AND FUNDING OF INNOVATIVE PROJECTS.

McKEOWN SAYS NEGATIVE ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT PEOPLE WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES CAN PREVENT THEM FROM BEING INCLUDED IN THEIR COMMUNITIES. SO THE COUNCIL IS OFFERING A $500 CASH PRIZE – DONATED BY THE MAGAZINE AND CONTEST SPONSOR “PARENTING NEW HAMPSHIRE “– FOR THE “COUNT ME IN” VIDEO CONTEST.

THE IDEA IS TO CREATE AN ORIGINAL SHORT VIDEO OR VIDEO SLIDE SHOW SHOWING PEOPLE WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES IN A POSITIVE LIGHT, BEING INCLUDED, AND DOING ONE OF THE MANY THINGS PEOPLE MAY NOT REALIZE THEY CAN.

VIDEO SUBMISSIONS SHOULD BE NO LONGER THAN 30 SECONDS IN LENGTH. THE WINNING VIDEO WILL BE FEATURED IN A FUTURE PUBLIC AWARENESS CAMPAIGN.

ENTRY DEADLINE IS NOV. 1, 2013.
