CONWAY DUMP STORE TO CLOSE

by Christian Mower on April 12, 2012

THE DUMP STORE AT THE CONWAY TRANSFER STATION WILL CLOSE AT NOON SUNDAY (APRIL 15) UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

CONWAY TOWN MANAGER EARL SIRES SAYS SELECTMEN APPROVED THE IDEA BY A VOTE OF 4-0.

HE SAYS THE REASON FOR THE CLOSURE IS SELECTMEN HAVE A NUMBER OF CONCERNS ABOUT HOW THE DUMP STORE HAS BEEN OPERATING – BUT THEY WANT TO GIVE A SUBCOMMITTEE OF THE MOUNT WASHINGTON VALLEY SOLID WASTE DISTRICT A CHANCE TO MEET AND COME UP WITH POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS TO THE PROBLEMS.

AMONG THE CONCERNS, THAT SOME PEOPLE HAVE BEEN MONOPOLIZING THE STORE AND GETTING FIRST PICK OF ITEMS THAT ARE BROUGHT IN – AND THAT SOME PEOPLE ARE INTIMIDATING OTHERS BY ACTUALLY WALKING UP TO VEHICLES AND TAKING ITEMS OUT OF IT DIRECTLY.

THE SUBCOMMITTEE HAS ALREADY HELD ONE PUBLIC MEETING TO DISCUSS THE ISSUES AND IS EXPECTED TO HAVE ANOTHER ONE SOON.

SIRES SAYS THE SUBCOMMITTEE HASN’T PRESENTED SELECTMEN WITH ANY FEEDBACK YET.

USED CLOTHING AND SHOES CAN STILL BE PLACED IN THE PLANET AID CONTAINERS AT THE TRANSFER STATION.

CONWAY HAS POSTED A LIST OF THRIFT STORES ON THE TOWN WEBSITE WHERE ITEMS CAN BE DONATED, INCLUDING VAUGHAN COMMUNITY SERVICES, THE GIBSON CENTER, CHRIST CHURCH EPISCOPAL AND THE RESCUE LEAGUE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE NORTH.
