CONWAY HOLDS HAZARDOUS WASTE DAY

THE TOWN OF CONWAY WILL HOST HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION DAY SATURDAY SEPT. 21, 2013.

RESIDENTS OF CONWAY, ALBANY, EATON, BARTLETT, JACKSON, MADISON AND HALES LOCATION ARE ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE.

TOWN OFFICIALS SAY THE AVERAGE HOUSEHOLD THROWS MORE THAN 15 POUNDS OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS INTO THE TRASH EVERY YEAR. THAT CAN CAUSE A VARIETY OF PROBLEMS, INCLUDING CERTAIN HEALTH THREATS, THE RELEASE OF TOXIC FUMES, CONTAMINATION OF WATER SUPPLIES AND THE KILLING OF FISH AND WILDLIFE.

THE COLLECTION DAY IS SET UP TO ALLOW FOR THE SAFE AND PROPER DISPOSAL OF SUCH HAZARDOUS MATERIALS, THAT MAY CONTAIN WARNING LABELS OF “DANGER” – MEANING MOST TOXIC – TO “WARNING” OR “CAUTION” FOR LEAST TOXIC.

HAZARDOUS PRODUCTS INCLUDE THOSE THAT ARE FLAMMABLE, MEANING THEY ARE EASILY SET ON FIRE OR IGNITED – CORROSIVE, MEANING THEY BURN AND DESTROY LIVING TISSUE ON CONTACT – EXPLOSIVE, MEANING THEY DETONATE OR EXPLODE AFTER EXPOSURE TO HEAT, SUDDEN SHOCK OR PRESSURE – AND TOXIC OR POISONOUS, MEANING THEY CAN CAUSE INJURY OR DEATH THROUGH INGESTION, INHALATION OR ABSORPTION THROUGH THE SKIN.

COLLECTION HOURS SATURDAY WILL RUN FROM 8 – 11:30 A.M. AT THE CONWAY TRANSFER STATION, 755 EAST CONWAY RD.

EACH HOUSEHOLD IS LIMITED TO 10 GALLONS OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS TO DISPOSE OF BUT IF THE AMOUNT EXCEEDS THAT LIMIT, ARRANGEMENTS FOR DISPOSAL CAN BE MADE ON-SITE WITH A CONTRACTOR.
