CONWAY HOUSING DEVELOPMENT GROUNDBREAKING MONDAY

by Christian Mower on November 26, 2011

MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC ARE INVITED TO A CONWAY CEREMONY MONDAY AFTERNOON TO BREAK GROUND FOR A 32-UNIT APARTMENT BUILDING DESIGNED TO PROVIDE AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR PEOPLE WHO LIVE AND WORK IN THE CONWAY AREA.

THERESA KENNETT – WHO IS PROGRAM DIRECTOR FOR THE MOUNT WASHINGTON VALLEY HOUSING COALITION – SAYS A RECENT STUDY IN NEW HAMPSHIRE SHOWED AS MANY AS 40 PERCENT OF WORKERS CAN’T AFFORD TO BUY A HOUSE OR EVEN RENT IN THE AREA THEY WORK IN.

THE NEW APARTMENT BUILDING WILL OFFER RENTAL PRICES SET BY THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT AT LESS THAN THE MEDIAN WAGE LEVEL FOR THE VALLEY  – THE GOAL OF KENNETT’S GROUP AND OTHER AGENCIES IS TO ENCOURAGE DEVELOPERS TO BUILD MORE OF THIS TYPE OF HOUSING IN THE VALLEY SO WORKERS CAN AFFORD TO LIVE NEAR WHERE THEY WORK.

KENNETT SAYS A 1-BEDROOM UNIT AT THE NEW CONWAY PINES SITE AT POLIQUIN DRIVE WILL RENT FOR JUST UNDER 700 DOLLARS A MONTH, A 2-BEDROOM UNIT FOR JUST UNDER $800 A MONTH AND A 3-BEDROOM UNIT FOR MORE THAN 800 DOLLARS A MONTH.

CABLE AND PHONE SERVICE IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RENT.

THE NEARLY 3-ACRE DEVELOPMENT WILL BE MANAGED BY MANCHESTER NEW HAMPSHIRE BASED GREAT BRIDGE PROPERTIES – KENNETT’S GROUP HELPED THE COMPANY GET FINANCING FOR THE PROJECT – AND IT WILL INCLUDE A PLAYGROUND AND A PARKING LOT.

THE RURAL DEVELOPMENT BRANCH OF THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE IS ALSO INVOLVED – KENNETT EXPECTS EXEC. COUNCILOR RAY BURTON TO JOIN FEDERAL, STATE AND LOCAL OFFICIALS AT THE GROUNDBREAKING.

THE SITE IS LOCATED AT POLIQUIN DRIVE AND ROUTE 16 IN CONWAY, ACROSS FROM THE SHUR FINE PLAZA. THE GROUNDBREAKING PHOTOGRAPH WILL BE TAKEN AT 2:30 P.M. MONDAY AND A RECEPTION WILL FOLLOW AT THE NEARBY CONWAY TECHNOLOGY VILLAGE STARTING AT 3 P.M.
