CONWAY LIBRARY TRUSTEES TO MEET AGAIN TUESDAY

by Gair on October 9, 2012

A STATEMENT POSTED ON THE WEBSITE OF THE CONWAY PUBLIC LIBRARY SAYS TRUSTEES WILL MEET IN EMERGENCY SESSION AGAIN TUESDAY AT 3:30 P.M.

THERE ARE ONLY TWO ITEMS LISTED ON THE AGENDA:

1. PERSONNEL – MOVEMENT TO NON PUBLIC SESSION
2. ADJOURN

TRUSTEES PRESUMABLY WILL GO INTO NON PUBLIC SESSION TO DISCUSS COMPLAINTS LODGED AGAINST LIBRARY DIRECTOR TARA THOMAS IN RELATION TO A SO-CALLED RESTRUCTURING PLAN INTRODUCED IN SEPT., 2012.

THE TRUSTEES HAVE SINCE WITHDRAWN THE PLAN AND APOLOGIZED FOR IT BUT FOUR LIBRARIANS WHO’S JOBS WERE THREATENED UNDER IT – WHO HAVE WORKED AT THE LIBRARY FOR MORE THAN 75 YEARS COMBINED – ALLEGE IN THEIR COMPLAINT THOMAS ACTED IMPROPERLY IN CREATING “AN ENVIRONMENT OF HARASSMENT, UNPROFESSIONALISM AND ABUSE…”

A LAWYER REPRESENTING THE FOUR LIBRARIANS TOLD TRUSTEES THURSDAY AT ANOTHER MEETING HIS CLIENTS DREADED COMING TO WORK IN THE MORNING AT THE LIBRARY AND SOME HAD SUFFERED PHYSICALLY BECAUSE OF THE SITUATION WITH THOMAS.

ED ALKALAY AGREED TO PRESENT THE BOARD WITH SPECIFIC ALLEGATIONS AGAINST THOMAS AND TO GIVE TRUSTEES UNTIL SUNDAY (OCT. 14) TO RESPOND TO THE COMPLAINT.

VARIOUS PUBLIC SPEAKERS HAVE SUGGESTED THE BOARD FIRE THOMAS OR AT LEAST PLACE HER ON ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE DURING THEIR INVESTIGATION – SAYING THE SITUATION IS AFFECTING THE ENVIRONMENT AT THE LIBRARY AND LIBRARY USERS – AND QUESTIONED WHY BOARD MEMBERS HAD NOT INCLUDED INTERVIEWS WITH THE LIBRARIANS WHO HAVE LODGED THE ALLEGATIONS AS PART OF THEIR INVESTIGATION.
