Conway, NH – A Conway man is being charged with stealing the identity of an elderly couple. According to Conway Police 41-year-old Robert Amaral allegedly acquired and unlawfully utilized the personal information of a local elderly couple to gain access to their banking and credit card accounts. He then utilized this information to steal more than $20,000 from the couple over the course of several months. On Wednesday a warrant for his arrest was issued and he was subsequently arrested during a traffic stop.
Amaral faces 12 felony level offenses and 1 misdemeanor. These charges consisted of 5 counts of Identity Fraud (Felony A), 4 counts of Credit Card Fraud (Felony A), 2 counts of Credit Card Fraud (Felony B) and 1 count of Credit Card Fraud (Misdemeanor A).
A Class A felony is punishable by a maximum range of 7 ½ to 15 years in prison and a fine up to $4,000. A Class B felony is punishable by a maximum range of 3 ½ to 7 years in prison and a fine up to $4,000. A Class A misdemeanor is punishable up to 1 year in jail and a fine up to $2,000.
Police said that Robert Amaral has a lengthy criminal history in Rhode Island for crimes to include Credit Card Theft, Burglary and Assault.
Amaral wasbeing held on $25,000 cash bail, and was then brought before the 3rd Circuit Conway District Court on Thursday, March 9.
