Conway officer will manage arena

The second highest ranking officer in the Conway Police Department is retiring to manage the Ham Ice Arena in Conway.

Chris Weiss – the general manager at Crest Auto World in North Conway and president of the board of directors of the non profit arena – says he’s excited to announce that Lt. Chris Perley will take over as general manager, succeeding Darrell Umlah, who is retiring after working at the Ham for 17 years.

Weiss says Perley “knocked his socks off” during the job interview process and his board voted unanimously to select him, being drawn to him by his public relations skills and management experience.

Weiss also praises Umlah as doing an incredible job, saying he’s owed a debt of gratitude for everything he has accomplished.

Weiss says the goal of the Ham is to provide the community a safe place to recreate and live a happy and healthy lifestyle, including curling, figure skating, a men’s hockey league and tournament play. Weiss says he’d like the Ham to become more of a regional institution in the future.

The arena is currently closed for spring cleaning and maintenance and will re-open in late June.

Perley has been Chief Ed Wagner’s executive officer for the past seven years and has spent the majority of his 29 years in law enforcement with the Conway department.

Wagner says there aren’t too many people who have the commitment, energy and perseverance as Perley – and he will be missed.

Perley starts his new job June 1, 2014.
