by Christian Mower on April 25, 2012

THE CONWAY POLICE DEPT. AND NEW HAMPSHIRE STATE POLICE ARE AMONG SEVERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES IN CARROLL COUNTY THAT WILL TAKE PART IN SATURDAY’S NATIONAL PRESCRIPTION DRUG TAKE BACK DAY.

CONWAY POLICE LT. CHRIS PERLEY SAYS THE PROGRAM – CONDUCTED IN COOPERATION WITH THE FEDERAL DRUG ENFORCEMENT ADMINISTRATION – IS DESIGNED TO SAFELY COLLECT AND DISPOSE OF DANGEROUS UNUSED PRESCRIPTION DRUGS.

MOST COLLECTION POINTS IN CARROLL COUNTY AND WESTERN MAINE WILL BE OPEN SATURDAY FROM 10 A.M. UNTIL 2 P.M. FOR THE TURN IN OF EXPIRED, UNUSED OR UNWANTED PRESCRIPTION DRUGS.

CONWAY POLICE DETECTIVE CHRIS MATTEI SAID AT LAST FALL’S DRUG TAKE BACK DAY THAT PRESCRIPTION DRUGS ARE A SERIOUS PROBLEM.

PERLEY SAYS EVERY YEAR IN THE U.S. THOUSANDS OF LEGALLY PRESCRIBED DRUGS END UP BEING USED ILLEGALLY OR SOLD ON THE STREETS – AND REDUCING THE SURPLUS IS ONE WAY TO KEEP CHILDREN SAFE FROM THE DRUGS
PERLEY SAYS MORE PEOPLE DIED FROM DRUG OVERDOSES IN NEW HAMPSHIRE LAST YEAR (2011) THAN FROM CAR CRASHES.

CONWAY POLICE WILL SET UP A COLLECTION POINT SATURDAY MORNING AT THE WALMART ON NORTH SOUTH ROAD.

OTHER PARTICIPATING DEPARTMENTS INCLUDE NEW HAMPSHIRE STATE POLICE TROOPS E AND F – AND POLICE DEPARTMENTS IN OSSIPEE, TUFTONBORO, MOULTONBOROUGH, WOLFEBORO, GORHAM, LINCOLN AND WAKEFIELD. IN MAINE, PARTICIPATING POLICE DEPARTMENTS INCLUDE FRYEBURG, BRIDGTON AND THE OXFORD COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT.

AUTHORITIES SAY A TOTAL OF NEARLY A MILLION POUNDS OF MEDICATION HAS BEEN TURNED IN FROM 3 PREVIOUS NATIONAL DRUG TAKE BACK DAYS.
