CONWAY P.D. TO PARTICIPATE IN DRUG TAKE BACK DAY

by Christian Mower on October 25, 2011

THE CONWAY POLICE DEPARTMENT WILL JOIN SEVERAL OTHER LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES IN CARROLL COUNTY AND WESTERN MAINE FOR SATURDAY’S NATIONAL PRESCRIPTION DRUG TAKE BACK DAY.

DET. CHRIS MATTEI SAYS  PRESCRIPTION DRUGS ARE A SERIOUS PROBLEM – PROBABLY THE MOST ABUSED TYPE OF DRUG POLICE ARE STARTING TO SEE IN THE U.S., ESPECIALLY IN CONWAY. HE MOST OF THE DRUGS ARE LAWFULLY OBTAINED AND THEN ONE OF TWO THINGS HAPPENS – EITHER THEY AREN’T USED OR THEY ARE TAKEN – EVEN BY FAMILY AND FRIENDS – AND THEN ABUSED AND SOLD.

MATTEI SAYS THE TAKE BACK DAY PROVIDES A GOOD WAY FOR PEOPLE TO TURN IN EXPIRED OR UNWANTED PRESCRIPTION DRUGS AND PREVENT THEM FROM GETTING TO THE STREETS – OR BEING A HARMFUL ADDITIVE TO PUBLIC DRINKING SUPPLIES IF THEY’RE PUT INTO THE WATER SYSTEM.

CONWAY POLICE WILL SET UP A TENT FOR TURN-IN FROM 10 A.M. TO 2 P.M. SATURDAY AT THE WALMART ON NORTH SOUTH ROAD. MATTEI SAYS THE SERVICE IS FREE AND ANONYMOUS, WITH NO QUESTIONS ASKED.

THE DAY IS NOT INTENDED TO FOR TURN-IN OF ILLICIT DRUGS OR NEEDLES. IT’S SPONSORED NATIONALLY BY THE DRUG ENFORCEMENT ADMINISTRATION OF THE U.S. JUSTICE DEPARTMENT.

LAST APRIL AMERICANS TURNED 188 TONS OF PRESCRIPTION DRUGS DURING TAKE BACK DAY AT MORE THAN 5,000 LOCATIONS ACROSS THE U.S.

OTHER AGENCIES PARTICIPATING SATURDAY INCLUDE NEW HAMPSHIRE STATE POLICE TROOP E IN TAMWORTH AND POLICE DEPARTMENTS IN JACKSON, OSSIPEE AND MOULTONBOROUGH.

IN MAINE, POLICE DEPARTMENTS IN FRYEBURG AND BRIDGTON – AND THE OXFORD COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT WILL PARTICIPATE.
