CONWAY SCHOOL DIST. VOTERS REJECT BUDGET MODS

by Gair on March 8, 2013

THE ASST. SUPT. FOR SAU 9 SAYS ABOUT 200 PEOPLE TURNED OUT WEDNESDAY NIGHT AT KENNETT HIGH SCHOOL FOR THE DELIBERATIVE MEETING OF THE CONWAY SCHOOL DISTRICT.

DR. BOB GADOMSKI SAYS THERE WAS A SPIRITED DISCUSSION ABOUT ARTICLE 5, THE OPERATING BUDGET. THREE PROPOSALS TO MODIFY THE MUNICIPAL BUDGET COMMITTEE’S RECOMMENDED AMOUNT OF ABOUT $33,137,000 – WERE ALL VOTED DOWN.

THE FIRST PROPOSAL WAS TO REDUCE THE BUDGET AMOUNT BY 10 PERCENT – THE SECOND WAS TO REDUCE IT BY $165,000 – AND THE LAST WAS TO INCREASE IT BY ABOUT $372,000 – TO ABOUT $33,510,000 – THE AMOUNT RECOMMENDED BY THE SCHOOL BOARD.

SINCE ALL THREE MOTIONS WERE REJECTED BY VOTERS AT THE MEETING, THE ARTICLE STANDS AS WRITTEN.

THAT MEANS WHEN VOTERS GO TO THE POLLS APRIL 9, 2013 THEY CAN EITHER APPROVE THE AMOUNT OF ABOUT $33,137,000 – OR REJECT IT, AND THE BUDGET WOULD REVERT TO THE HIGHER AMOUNT OF THE DEFAULT BUDGET, AT ABOUT $33,636,000.

ALL OTHER WARRANT ARTICLES WERE LEFT “AS WRITTEN,” WITH THE EXCEPTION OF ARTICLE 14, THE PROPOSAL TO SEE IF CONWAY RESIDENTS WILL PAY $12,000 TO SUPPORT TIN MOUNTAIN CONSERVATION CENTER PROGRAMS IN THREE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS.

GADOMSKI SAYS THERE WAS CONSIDERABLE DISCUSSION OF THAT ARTICLE – THE FINAL RESULT WAS THE WORDING OF THE ARTICLE WAS CHANGED TO REFLECT THE PROGRAM APPLYING TO THREE “CONWAY” ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS INSTEAD OF THREE “SAU 9″ ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS.

GADOMSKI SAYS A MOTION TO DIRECT THE SCHOOL BOARD TO STUDY THE POSSIBILITY OF MOVING SIXTH GRADE TO KENNETT MIDDLE SCHOOL WAS ALSO DEFEATED – THE SCHOOL CURRENTLY SERVES STUDENTS IN 7TH AND 8TH GRADES.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT’S MEETING LASTED ABOUT THREE AND HALF HOURS.
