by Gair on November 6, 2013

THE CARROLL COUNTY ATTORNEY SAYS A 24-YEAR-OLD CONWAY MAN WHO USED TO BE THE
COACH OF THE GIRLS’ BASKETBALL TEAM AT KENNETT MIDDLE SCHOOL WILL SERVE TWO YEARS
AT THE CARROLL COUNTY JAIL AFTER ADMITTING HE SEXUALLY ASSAULTED A 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL.

ROBIN GORDON SAYS SHE’S HAPPY WITH THE PLEA AGREEMENT WORKED OUT WITH WILLIAM S.
CAVANAUGH OF RIVER ST., WHO HAD FACED THREE FELONY CHARGES THAT ON MORE THAN OCCASION
HE HAD SEXUALLY ASSAULTED ONE OF THE GIRLS ON HIS TEAM IN EARLY 2013.

CAVANAUGH ADMITTED ASSAULTING THE GIRL TWICE AND PLED GUILTY TO TWO MISDEMEANOR
CHARGES BEFORE HE WAS SENTENCED WEDNESDAY MORNING TO TWO ONE-YEAR CONSECUTIVE TERMS
IN CARROLL COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT IN OSSIPEE.

HE HAD FACED A POTENTIAL MAXIMUM TERM OF 21 YEARS IN THE STATE PRISON.

CAVANAUGH WAS ARRESTED AND CHARGED IN LATE FEBRUARY, 2013 AFTER A NEARLY 2-WEEK
INVESTIGATION BY CONWAY POLICE DETECTIVE RYAN WALLACE INTO ALLEGATIONS BROUGHT
AGAINST HIM BY MIDDLE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS.

GORDON SAYS SHE FEELS GOOD ABOUT THE CASE, SAYING CAVANAUGH TOOK RESPONSIBILITY
FOR HIS ACTIONS AND THE VICTIM’S FAMILY WAS HAPPY WITH THE RESULT – ALTHOUGH THEY FEEL CAVANAUGH HAD TAKEN A LOT FROM THEIR CHILD.

GORDON SAYS THE SENTENCE IS PUNITIVE ENOUGH BUT ALSO GIVES CAVANAUGH TIME TO ATTEND
A SEXUAL OFFENDER REHABILITATION PROGRAM. UNDER THE PLEA AGREEMENT, CAVANAUGH MUST
ALSO REGISTER AS A SEX OFFENDER FOR 10 YEARS.
