OSSIPEE POLICE SAY A 42-YEAR-OLD WASHINGTON, D.C. MAN HAS BEEN ARRESTED AND CHARGED IN CONNECTION WITH MONDAY’S BREAK-IN TO A CHURCH IN WEST OSSIPEE.

LT. JOE DUCHESNE SAYS A WAKEFIELD POLICE OFFICER TOOK A SUSPECT INTO CUSTODY ABOUT 7:30 A.M. TUESDAY AFTER SEEING HIM RIDING A BIKE ON ROUTE 16 IN WAKEFIELD.

POLICE HAD SATURATED THE AREA WITH PATROLS AFTER GETTING SEVERAL REPORTS TUESDAY MORNING A PERSON WHO FIT THE SUSPECT’S DESCRIPTION WAS RIDING A BIKE SOUTHBOUND ON ROUTE 16.

DUCHESNE THEN JOINED THE WAKEFIELD OFFICER AND TOOK JAMES QUINCY CAMPBELL INTO CUSTODY. CAMPBELL WAS ALLEGEDLY RIDING A DIFFERENT BICYCLE AT THE TIME OF HIS ARREST – PRESUMED STOLEN BY POLICE – THAN HE WAS WHEN HE ALLEGEDLY ESCAPED FROM THE CROSSROADS CHURCH ON ROUTE 16 IN WEST OSSIPEE LATE MONDAY MORNING AFTER BEING SPOTTED INSIDE THE CHURCH BY TWO MAINTENANCE WORKERS.

CAMPBELL IS CHARGED WITH FELONY BURGLARY, CRIMINAL MISCHIEF – FOR ALLEGEDLY BREAKING A WINDOW TO GET INTO THE CHURCH – AND RESISTING ARREST – FOR REFUSING ORDERS TO STOP EARLY MONDAY AFTERNOON AFTER HE WAS SIGHTED ALONG THE EDGE OF THE BEARCAMP RIVER. POLICE BELIEVE HE CROSSED THE RIVER AND CLIMBED UP PART OF MOUNT WHITTIER.

OFFICERS SUSPENDED THE SEARCH MONDAY AFTERNOON WHEN THEIR K-9 GERMAN SHEPHERD “ZEUS” OVERHEATED AFTER TRACKING THE SUSPECT MORE THAN TWO MILES IN THE INTENSE HEAT AND HUMIDITY.

ZEUS WAS REPORTED TO BE IN GOOD CONDITION TUESDAY.

CHURCH OFFICIALS TELL POLICE THEY DON’T BELIEVE ANYTHING WAS ACTUALLY TAKEN FROM THE CHURCH.

DUCHESNE SAYS CAMPBELL HAS A LENGTHY ARREST RECORD THAT REPORTEDLY INCLUDES PREVIOUS CHARGES FOR TRESPASSING, ASSAULTS AND THEFTS.

HE’S BEING HELD AT THE CARROLL COUNTY JAIL AND IS SCHEDULED TO APPEAR IN COURT WEDNESDAY.

ANYONE WHO MAY BE MISSING A BICYCLE – ONE IS A GREEN NAHAMI AND THE OTHER A WHITE L.L. BEAN ACADIA – IS ASKED TO CALL OSSIPEE POLICE.
