CENTER CONWAY STREET CLOSED AFTER CRASH

CONWAY POLICE SAY EAST MAIN STREET IN CENTER CONWAY – ALSO KNOWN AS ROUTE 302 – RE-OPENED SHORTLY AFTER 8:30 A.M. TUESDAY AFTER BEING CLOSED FOR ABOUT 8 HOURS BECAUSE OF A DOWNED POWER POLE NEAR THE CONWAY TOWN OFFICES.

A SPOKESMAN FOR PUBLIC SERVICE COMPANY OF NEW HAMPSHIRE SAYS ABOUT 650 CUSTOMERS LOST POWER FOR ABOUT SIX HOURS WHILE REPAIRS WERE MADE.

EARLY MORNING TRAFFIC WAS DIVERTED AT EASTMAN RD. TO EAST CONWAY RD. TO FRYEBURG, MAINE WHILE DRIVERS ENTERING NEW HAMPSHIRE FROM FRYEBURG WERE TURNED BACK AT THE STATE LINE STORE AND TOLD TO USE EAST CONWAY RD. TO GET TO CONWAY.

NEW HAMPSHIRE STATE POLICE SAY THE POLE CAME DOWN AFTER BEING HIT EARLIER IN THE MORNING TUESDAY BY A 40-YEAR-OLD DRIVER FROM MASSACHUSETTS.

SGT. JAMES FOGARTY OF TROOP E IN TAMWORTH SAYS TROOPERS ATTEMPTED TO STOP ALEX W. PALTRINERI OF WELLESLEY WHO WAS SOUTHBOUND ON ROUTE 16 IN TAMWORTH IN A DODGE PICKUP TRUCK JUST BEFORE 12:30 A.M. TUESDAY.

FOGARTY SAYS A CITIZEN HAD REPORTED BEING CONCERNED ABOUT AN IMPAIRED DRIVER.

PALTRINERI ALLEGEDLY REFUSED TO STOP FOR THE TROOPERS, DROVE OFF THE ROAD IN AN ATTEMPT TO ELUDE POLICE AND THEN HEADED NORTH TOWARD CONWAY.

CONWAY POLICE LT. CHRIS PERLEY SAYS CPL. MIKE BOUCHER AND PATROLMAN CHRISTOPHER KROSKI ASSISTED IN PUTTING DOWN TIRE DEFLATION DEVICES CALLED “STOP STICKS,” BUT EVEN AFTER GOING OVER THOSE, PALTRINERI ALLEGEDLY CONTINUED TO DRIVE UNTIL HE HIT THE POWER POLE.

HE WAS ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH AGGRAVATED DRIVING WHILE INTOXICATED, DRIVING WHILE INTOXICATED, RECKLESS DRIVING, RECKLESS CONDUCT, DISOBEYING AN OFFICER AND POSSESSION OF DRUGS.

HE WAS SCHEDULED TO BE ARRAIGNED TUESDAY IN DISTRICT COURT IN OSSIPEE.
