CONWAY POLICE CHARGE BOYS IN SKI SHOP FIRE

CONWAY POLICE SAY TWO BOYS – ONE 11 YEARS OLD AND THE OTHER 14 – HAVE BEEN ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH FELONY ARSON IN CONNECTION WITH WEDNESDAY NIGHT’S FIRE AT A POPULAR SKI SHOP IN NORTH CONWAY.

LT. CHRIS PERLEY SAYS THE TWO BOYS – WHO LIVE IN THE CONWAY AREA – WERE TAKEN INTO CUSTODY WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND HAVE SINCE BEEN RETURNED TO THEIR PARENTS.

NORTH CONWAY FIRE CHIEF PAT PREECE WAS BACK AT THE SCENE AT JOE JONES SUN AND SKI SHOP ON MECHANIC ST. WEDNESDAY MORNING WORKING WITH POLICE AND THE STATE FIRE MARSHAL’S OFFICE TO INVESTIGATE AFTER DETERMINING THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE WAS SUSPICIOUS.

PREECE SAYS HIS FIREFIGHTERS RESPONDED TO THE SKI SHOP WEDNESDAY SHORTLY AFTER 7:20 P.M. AND ON ARRIVAL FOUND A FIRE ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE BUILDING WAS GOING UP A WALL AND THE BUILDING WAS FULL OF SMOKE.

FIREFIGHTERS FROM CONWAY, BARTLETT AND REDSTONE ASSISTED – AS DID NORTH CONWAY AMBULANCE. NO ONE WAS HURT AND THE FIRE WAS BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL ABOUT 8:15 P.M. – AND FULLY OUT AROUND AN HOUR AND A HALF LATER.

PREECE SAYS THE STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO THE BUILDING IS NOT TOO BAD BUT THERE IS HEAVY SMOKE DAMAGE TO THE INVENTORY. HE DECLINES TO COMMENT ON HOW THE FIRE WAS FIRST REPORTED OR THE POSSIBLE CAUSE, CITING THE ONGOING INVESTIGATION.

THE STORE WAS CLOSED AT THE TIME.
