NORTH CONWAY FIRE CHIEF PAT PREECE SAYS TWO APARTMENTS AND A HOME THEATER INSTALLATION STORE WERE DAMAGED AFTER A SPRINKLER HEAD ACTIVATED IN A THIRD FLOOR APARTMENT FRIDAY NIGHT.

PREECE CALLED FOR MORE OF HIS UNITS AND CONWAY FIREFIGHTERS TO RESPOND TO 1857 WHITE MOUNTAIN HIGHWAY SHORTLY AFTER 6:15 P.M. AFTER HE FOUND WATER FLOWING DOWN THROUGH A SECOND FLOOR APARTMENT AND THEN INTO THE CINEMAESQUE STORE ON THE GROUND FLOOR.

THE CHIEF SAYS THE FLOW RATE WAS ABOUT 30 GALLONS A MINUTE FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES – THE WATER BROUGHT DOWN CEILING TILES AND DEBRIS AND FLOODED LIGHT FIXTURES.

POWER WAS SHUT OFF TO THE AFFECTED AREAS AND THE SPRINKLER SYSTEM WAS SHUT DOWN BUT THERE WAS WATER AND ELECTRICAL DAMAGE AND THE APARTMENTS WERE TEMPORARILY UNINHABITABLE.

NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED AND REPAIRS ARE ONGOING.

PREECE DECLINES TO CHARACTERIZE WHAT CAUSED THE INCIDENT BUT DOES SAY HE WILL BE ESCORTING A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE STATE FIRE MARSHAL’S OFFICE THROUGH THE AREA WEDNESDAY.
