The fire chief in Effingham says a 2-story wood frame building used as a garage was heavily damaged by a fire Thursday.

Randy Burbank says his firefighters responded to 24 Rufus Mountain Rd. just before noon. A first alarm was declared and firefighters from Freedom, Ossipee and Wakefield also responded.

Burbank says arriving responders found flames in the rear of the building spreading to the second floor, which was destroyed.

Part of the second floor collapsed and the first floor sustained smoke and water damage.

The fire was brought under control shortly before 12:45 p.m. and the last unit cleared the scene about an hour later.

No injuries were reported.
