NH FISH & GAME: TAKE IN THE BIRD FEEDERS

by Gair on April 2, 2013

CENTER CONWAY FIRE CHIEF RAY LEAVITT SAYS HE’S ALREADY SEEN ONE OUT AND ABOUT.

AND NEW HAMPSHIRE FISH AND GAME OFFICIALS SAY BEARS ARE BECOMING ACTIVE – AND YOU CAN HELP PREVENT VISITS FROM THEM BY TAKING DOWN YOUR BIRD FEEDER.

BIOLOGIST ANDREW TIMMINS SAYS THERE WERE A RECORD NUMBER OF MORE THAN 1,100 COMPLAINTS ABOUT BEARS STATEWIDE IN 2012, MOSTLY BECAUSE MOST NATURAL BEAR FOODS WERE ABSENT DURING THE SPRING AND SUMMER.

NEARLY HALF OF THE COMPLAINTS INVOLVED BEARS AT BIRD FEEDERS -AND THE ANIMALS RAIDING UNSECURED GARBAGE AT HOMES AND BUSINESSES. TIMMINS SAYS THOSE INCIDENTS COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED BY REMOVING BIRD FEEDERS AND SECURING GARBAGE.

HE SAYS BEARS ARE EXPERTS AT FINDING HIGH QUALITY FOOD – AND THEY CAN’T IGNORE SUNFLOWER SEEDS THAT ARE HIGH IN FAT AND PROTEIN.

TIMMINS SAYS YOU CAN AVOID ENCOUNTERS WITH BEARS BY STOPPING BIRD FEEDING NOW AND PUTTING YOUR FEEDER AWAY UNTIL DECEMBER – CLEANING UP AND DISPOSING OF ANY SPILLED BIRDSEED IN THE TRASH – SECURING GARBAGE IN AIRTIGHT CONTAINERS AND NOT PUTTING IT OUT UNTIL THE MORNING OF PICKUP – NOT PUTTING FOOD SCRAPS IN YOUR COMPOST PILE AND NOT LEAVING PET FOOD DISHES OUTSIDE – AND CLEANING AND STORING OUTDOOR GRILLS AFTER USE.

THE CONWAY POLICE DEPARTMENT TYPICALLY RESPONDS TO NUMEROUS REPORTS OF HUMAN ENCOUNTERS WITH BEARS DURING THE WARMER MONTHS AND LT. CHRIS PERLEY ALSO ENCOURAGES EVERYONE TO SECURE THEIR TRASH AND TAKE IN THEIR BIRD FEEDERS.

PERLEY SAYS IT’S UNFORTUNATE THE RESOLUTION TO HUMAN/BEAR CONFLICTS OFTEN ENDS WITH THE BEARS BEING PUT DOWN.
