FOOD PANTRY TO CONSOLIDATE IN OSSIPEE

by Christian Mower on January 18, 2012

THE LARGEST FOOD PANTRY IN CARROLL COUNTY IS TRYING TO CONSOLIDATE ITS OPERATIONS IN OSSIPEE – AND IS HOPING FOR DONATIONS OF LABOR, MATERIAL AND MONEY TO DO IT.

AGAPE MINISTRIES PRESIDENT AND DIRECTOR KEVIN STRAUGHAN OVERSEES AN OPERATION THAT PROVIDES FOR AS MANY AS 500 FAMILIES A MONTH IN THE GREATER OSSIPEE VALLEY.

STRAUGHAN SAYS AGAPE IS A GREEK WORD THAT MEANS “GOD’S PERFECT UNCONDITIONAL LOVE.”

HE STARTED THE OPERATION OUT OF HIS OWN BARN AND FOR YEARS HAS BEEN OPERATING OUT OF THE OSSIPEE VALLEY BIBLE CHURCH.

NOW STRAUGHAN IS GETTING CLOSE TO CO-LOCATING THE FOOD PANTRY AND A THRIFT STORE THAT SUPPORTS THE OPERATION UNDER A NEW ROOF AT A BUILDING THAT BURNED AT THE FORMER PINE HILL PLAZA NEAR THE PIZZA BARN ON ROUTE 16.

STRAUGHAN SAYS A CRANE COMPANY WILL HELP PUT THE TRUSSES UP, A NORTH CONWAY COMPANY HAS DONATED DUMPSTERS AND A LOCAL HARDWARE STORE HAS EXTENDED A LINE OF CREDIT FOR THE PROJECT.

HE HOPES TO HAVE THE ROOF ON THE BUILDING AND SEALED BY THE END OF JANUARY. THEN THERE WILL BE PLENTY MORE WORK TO DO INSIDE.

STRAUGHAN SAYS IT’S HARD TO ASK PEOPLE FOR MONEY TO HELP WITH THE PROJECT BECAUSE A LOT FOLKS ARE NOT IN A GREAT FINANCIAL POSITION TO HELP.

TAX-DEDUCTIBLE DONATIONS OF CASH, BUILDING MATERIALS, AND EVEN LABOR – AN ELECTRICIAN WHO CAN DO SOME WIRING OR DONATE SOME WIRING WOULD BE APPRECIATED – ARE ALL WELCOMED. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE MINISTRY AND THE BUILDING PROJECT, CALL (603) 539-4456 OR (603) 677-6826.
