by Christian Mower on May 18, 2012

FRYEBURG ACADEMY WILL HOST TWO WEEKEND EVENTS TO SUPPORT MAINE GAME WARDEN MAJOR GREG SANBORN, WHO SUFFERS FROM T-CELL LYMPHOMA, A RARE FORM OF CANCER. AN EFFORT IS UNDERWAY TO FIND SANBORN – AN ACADEMY GRADUATE WHO GREW UP IN FRYEBURG – A MATCHING STEM CELL DONOR.

FIRST UP IS A BENEFIT DINNER AND SILENT AUCTION TOMORROW SATURDAY AT 5 P.M. AT THE ACADEMY GYM TO RAISE MONEY FOR THE DONOR DRIVE.

THEN ON SUNDAY, FROM NOON TO 4 P.M., THE ACADEMY GYM WILL BE SET UP TO ALLOW FOR SCREENING INTERVIEWS AND CHEEK SWABS FOR POTENTIAL DONORS.

THE ACTUAL SWAB PROCEDURE – ALTHOUGH PAINLESS – IS EXPENSIVE, AT $100 PER TEST. SANBORN’S FRIENDS INTEND TO RAISE THE NECESSARY FUNDS AND SAY NO DONOR WILL BE TURNED AWAY. FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION ARE APPRECIATED, AND CAN BE MADE ONLINE AT www.friendsofgreg.net.

FLYERS WITH A PHOTO OF SANBORN IN HIS RED FORMAL UNIFORM HAVE BEEN CIRCULATING IN THE VALLEY AREA AND WESTERN MAINE.

SANBORN’S COUSIN – KIMBERLY NEWTON – SAYS HER FAMILY IS VERY GRATEFUL TO FRYEBURG ACADEMY AND EVENT ORGANIZER ELLEN GUILFORD – AND COUNTLESS OTHER PEOPLE AND BUSINESSES WHO ARE HELPING.

TO VOLUNTEER TO HELP AT THE DINNER OR THE STEM CELL DRIVE, CALL GUILFORD AT (207) 754-3143.
