HOUNSELL ELECTED CONWAY LIBRARY BOARD CHAIR

by Christian Mower on April 29, 2013

TRUSTEES OF THE CONWAY PUBLIC LIBRARY TRUSTEES CHOSE NEWLY ELECTED MEMBER MARK HOUNSELL AS THEIR CHAIRMAN THURSDAY AFTERNOON – ONE OF THE FIRST OFFICIAL ACTS TAKEN AT THE BOARD’S FIRST PUBLIC MEETING SINCE CONWAY’S TOWN MEETING.

HOUNSELL AND WILLIAM MARVEL – THE OTHER NEWLY ELECTED BOARD MEMBER WHO WAS VOTED IN AS TREASURER THURSDAY – WERE OUTSPOKEN CRITICS LAST YEAR OF THE BOARD’S RESTRUCTURING PLAN THAT THREATENED THE JOBS OF FOUR LONGTIME LIBRARIANS – AND LED TO THE EVENTUAL DEPARTURE OF LIBRARY DIRECTOR TARA THOMAS.

A SMALL AUDIENCE OF LESS THAN A DOZEN PEOPLE OBSERVED THE BOARD’S MEETING THURSDAY, WHICH MOSTLY FOCUSED ON PROCEDURAL ISSUES.

A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF TIME AT THE MEETING WAS SPENT DISCUSSING MARVEL’S REQUEST FOR ACCESS AND INVOLVEMENT IN SEARCH COMMITTEE MEETINGS LOOKING FOR A NEW LIBRARY DIRECTOR.

THAT COMMITTEE IS MADE UP OF ONE “FRIEND OF THE LIBRARY,” TWO PATRONS, TWO STAFF MEMBERS AND TWO TRUSTEES. THE BOARD VOTED TO ALLOW ANY TRUSTEE ACCESS TO THE COMMITTEE’S MEETINGS – BUT NOT THE AUTHORITY TO PARTICIPATE IN THEM.

TRUSTEE AND SEARCH COMMITTEE CO-CHAIR SARAH CHARLES SAYS EIGHT CANDIDATES ARE BEING SERIOUSLY CONSIDERED AS REPLACEMENTS FOR THOMAS.

TRUSTEES ALSO DISCUSSED THE PROBLEM OF LIMITED PARKING AT THE LIBRARY, WHETHER LONGTIME AND TRUSTED VOLUNTEERS SHOULD BE ALLOWED ACCESS TO PATRONS’ PERSONAL INFORMATION – AND POSSIBLE OPTIONS TO ACCEPT GIFTS IN HONOR OF A POPULAR FLY FISHERMAN WHO HAS PASSED ON.
