JACKSON STUDENTS SUPPORT WOUNDED WARRIORS

by Christian Mower on May 31, 2013

SIXTH GRADE STUDENTS AT JACKSON GRAMMAR SCHOOL WANT TO CONTRIBUTE TO A CHARITY, SO THEY HAVE ORGANIZED A FUN RUN IN NORTH CONWAY SATURDAY MORNING (JUNE 1, 2013), WITH PROCEEDS TO BENEFIT THE WOUNDED WARRIOR PROJECT, A NATIONAL NON-PROFIT GROUP THAT WORKS TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT THE NEEDS OF INJURED U.S. SERVICE MEMBERS.

JACKSON RESIDENT AND RETIRED DENTIST DR. GERRY CARRIER, HIS FAMILY AND VALLEY AREA RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES TRADITIONALLY HOST SEVERAL WOUNDED WARRIORS AND THEIR FAMILIES BEFORE CHRISTMAS EACH YEAR FOR RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES IN A PROGRAM CALLED “CHRISTMAS CAN CURE” THAT’S AFFILIATED WITH THE PROJECT.

NOW THE EIGHT JACKSON SIXTH GRADERS ARE DOING THEIR PART TO SUPPORT THE WARRIORS BY HOSTING SATURDAY’S FUN RUN AT WHITAKER WOODS OFF ROUTE 16. SOME OF THE 6TH GRADERS AT JACKSON GRAMMAR – INCLUDING FOSTER PIOTROW – HAVE MET WOUNDED WARRIORS AT CHRISTMAS CAN CURE EVENTS – HE SAYS A LOT OF THE WARRIORS HAVE MENTAL AND PHYSICAL INJURIES SO IT’S NICE TO RAISE MONEY FOR THEM – AND AWARENESS.

FOSTER’S CLASSMATE EDEN LEVITT SAYS THE WARRIORS SHE HAS MET ARE REALLY NICE PEOPLE AND SHE DIDN’T REALLY KNOW ABOUT THEM BEFORE SHE STARTED WORKING WITH HER CLASSMATES ON THE FUN RUN.

EDEN’S CLASSMATE DANIEL WEEDER HAS DONE A LOT OF WORK FOR THE FUN RUN – HE’LL TALK TO THE RUNNERS AND WALKERS BEFORE THEY START SATURDAY MORNING. HE SAYS SOME OF THE INJURIES THE WARRIORS COME HOME WITH ARE NOT ALWAYS SEEN AND THE PUBLIC NEEDS TO BE EDUCATED ABOUT WHAT WOUNDED WARRIORS GO THROUGH.

REGISTRATION FOR THE FUN RUN STARTS AT 8 A.M. SATURDAY AND THE RACE STARTS AROUND 9 A.M. THERE WILL BE A ONE MILE LOOP AND A 5K LOOP – THERE’S NO CHARGE TO RUN OR WALK, BUT DONATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED. THERE WILL ALSO BE A TRIVIA GAME WITH PRIZES.
