THE PITTSBURGH PIRATES HAVE SELECTED CONWAY’S JEFF LOCKE AS THE TEAM’S 5TH STARTING PITCHER FOR THE UPCOMING BASEBALL SEASON.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL DOT COM (www.mlb.com) REPORTS LOCKE MADE THE ROTATION WEDNESDAY MORNING AS THE PIRATES CUT NINE OTHER PLAYERS TO MAKE IT DOWN TO A 25-MAN ROSTER.

WRITER TOM SINGER SAYS LOCKE WAS THE “STEADIEST STARTER IN EXHIBITION PLAY, WITH A 3.38 E-R-A IN 21 AND A THIRD INNINGS.”

LOCKE TOLD SINGER “THIS WAS GOING TO BE A GREAT DAY, EITHER WAY. I WAS GOING TO FIND OUT WHERE I’D OPEN THE SEASON, AND WHETHER IT WAS HERE OR IN TRIPLE-A. JUST KNOWING WAS GOING TO HELP GET ME READY.”

LOCKE WILL TAKE TO THE HILL EARLY THURSDAY AFTERNOON FOR THE PIRATES FINAL PRE-SEASON GAME, AGAINST THE NEW YORK YANKEES.

THE STORY OF LOCKE’S SELECTION IS THE FEATURED LEAD STORY IN THURSDAY’S UNION LEADER.
