MAINE GAME WARDEN REMEMBERED; SERVICES SET

FRIENDS AND FAMILY ARE REMEMBERING MAINE GAME WARDEN MAJ. GREGG SANBORN, WHO DIED TUESDAY OF A RARE FORM OF CANCER AT THE AGE OF 47. SANBORN – A 23-YEAR-VETERAN AND THE SECOND HIGHEST RANKING OFFICER IN THE MAINE WARDEN SERVICE – GRADUATED FROM FRYEBURG ACADEMY IN 1984.

ACADEMY SPOKESPERSON RACHEL ANDREWS DAMON SAYS SANBORN WAS ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR ALUMS EVE TO WALK THE HALLS OF THE ACADEMY – HE WAS A PERSON WHO WAS LOVED AND RESPECTED – AND EVERYONE WAS PROUD OF HIS ACCOMPLISHMENTS.

IT WAS AT THE ACADEMY IN THE SPRING OF 2012 THAT HUNDREDS OF SUPPORTERS TURNED OUT TO RAISE MONEY FOR SANBORN AND BE TESTED TO FIND A SUITABLE DONOR MATCH FOR HIM.

IN A LETTER OF THANKS AFTER THE “BE THE MATCH” EVENT, SANBORN SAID NEARLY 200 POTENTIAL DONORS HAD BEEN TESTED AT THE ACADEMY – AND SIMILAR DRIVES IN MAINE AND NEW HAMPSHIRE HAD IDENTIFIED MORE THAN 700 POTENTIAL DONORS FOR A WORLD WIDE REGISTRY.

A MATCH WAS FOUND FOR SANBORN – AN UNIDENTIFIED 26-YEAR-OLD MAN – AND SANBORN SAID FINDING IT CLEARED ONE OF THE BIGGEST HURDLES FOR HIM TO BE CURED. HE ENTERED A BOSTON HOSPITAL FOR A WEEK THE SUMMER OF 2012 FOR A STEM CELL TRANSPLANT AND EXPECTED TO TAKE ABOUT A YEAR TO ALLOW HIS IMMUNE SYSTEM TO RECOVER.

GOV. PAUL LEPAGE ANNOUNCED SANBORN’S UNTIMELY PASSING TUESDAY NIGHT – AND PAID TRIBUTE TO HIM – AS HE BEGAN HIS STATE OF THE STATE SPEECH IN AUGUSTA.

VISITING HOURS ARE SUNDAY, FEB. 10TH FROM 4-6 P.M. AND 7-9 P.M. AT THE MAINE CRIMINAL JUSTICE ACADEMY, 15 OAK GROVE RD., VASSALBORO. THE FUNERAL IS MONDAY FEB. 11TH AT 11 A.M. AT THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE ACADEMY.

TRANSPORTATION FROM FRYEBURG TO THE FUNERAL HAS BEEN ARRANGED BY COACH BUS BY THE FRIENDS OF GREGG SANBORN AT A COST OF $25/ PERSON. CALL MARION BRINE AT (207) 935-2974 IF INTERESTED IN RIDING. THE BUS WILL DEPART FRYEBURG AT 8 A.M. MONDAY SO PLEASE BE AT THE BUS NO LATER THAN 7:45 A.M. IT WILL GO DIRECTLY TO THE MCJA. A LIGHT LUNCHEON WILL BE SERVED AFTER THE SERVICE, PRIOR TO RETURN TO FRYEBURG.

A PUBLIC CELEBRATION OF SANBORN’S LIFE HOSTED BY FRIENDS OF GREGG SANBORN WILL BE HELD 2 P.M. WEDNESDAY FEB. 13TH AT THE FRYEBURG ACADEMY LEURA HILL EASTMAN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER, BRADLEY ST., FRYEBURG. IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, THE ACADEMY WELCOMES DONATIONS TO ESTABLISH A GIFT OR SCHOLARSHIP IN SANBORN’S NAME.
