A NEW HAMPSHIRE FISH AND GAME OFFICER SAYS A 57-YEAR-OLD MASSACHUSETTS MAN IS DEAD AFTER EXPERIENCING A MEDICAL EMERGENCY WHILE HIKING ON MOUNT WASHINGTON MONDAY MORNING.

LT. JIM GOSS SAYS GARY MUISE OF SHARON WAS HIKING WITH HIS TWO TEENAGE DAUGHTERS ON THE TUCKERMAN RAVINE TRAIL WHEN HE COLLAPSED ABOUT TWO AND A HALF MILES FROM THE APPALACHIAN MOUNTAIN CLUB’S PINKHAM NOTCH VISITOR CENTER.

ONE OF MUISE’S DAUGHTERS RAN DOWN THE TRAIL TO GET HELP WHILE OTHER HIKERS STOPPED TO ASSIST. STAFF FROM THE AMC ATTEMPTED TO REVIVE MUISE BUT COULD NOT. HE WAS THEN CARRIED DOWN TO THE VISITOR CENTER BY CONSERVATION OFFICERS, AMC STAFF AND RESCUE SERVICE VOLUNTEERS.

LATER IN THE DAY MONDAY, CONSERVATION OFFICERS AND OTHER AGENCIES HELPED A MICHIGAN MAN WHO SUFFERED A MEDICAL EVENT WHILE HIKING ON THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL IN GLENCLIFF, NEW HAMPSHIRE.

OFFICERS SAY DANIEL W. TISRON OF EAST JORDAN – A THROUGH HIKER ON THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL WHO HAD BEEN HIKING EVERY DAY SINCE LEAVING GEORGIA SEVERAL MONTHS AGO – HAD A MEDICAL PROBLEM ON THE AT SHORTLY BEFORE 4 P.M. AND WAS UNABLE TO WALK.

RESCUERS REACHED TISRON ABOUT 5:30 P.M. ABOUT A MILE IN FROM THE TRAIL HEAD ON ROUTE 25 AND EVALUATED HIS CONDITION. HE WAS HELPED DOWN THE TRAIL AFTER HIS CONDITION IMPROVED, AND MEDICAL PERSONNEL ASKED HIM TO REST FOR A FEW DAYS BEFORE CONTINUING HIS HIKE.

IN ANOTHER INCIDENT, OFFICERS SAY A 30-YEAR-OLD RHODE ISLAND WOMAN WAS HELPED DOWN THE DANIEL WEBSTER SCOUT TRAIL ON MOUNT MADISON OVERNIGHT SUNDAY AFTER SHE EXPERIENCED KNEE PAIN.

CONSERVATION OFFICER MATT HOLMES SAYS TRIPTI PATIL OF PROVIDENCE AND HER HIKING COMPANION WERE NEAR THE SUMMIT OF MADISON WHEN SHE EXPERIENCED SUDDEN KNEE PAIN AND THE PAIR TURNED AROUND IN A SELF-RESCUE ATTEMPT. OTHER HIKERS STOPPED TO HELP AND HER KNEE WAS PLACED IN A SPLINT.

AMC STAFF REACHED PATIL AROUND 10:30 P.M. SUNDAY NIGHT. HOLMES AND ANOTHER OFFICER GOT TO HER AFTER MIDNIGHT – AND SHE WAS HELPED DOWN THE TRAIL, REACHING THE DOLLY COPP CAMPGROUND IN MARTINS LOCATION ABOUT 4 A.M. MONDAY.
HOLMES SAYS THE PAIR WAS WELL PREPARED, BOTH WITH GEAR AND ATTITUDE TOWARD THE SITUATION. FOR INFORMATION ON HOW TO PROPERLY PREPARE FOR A HIKE, SEE THE WEBSITE AT www.hikesafe.com.
