“IT’S A GOOD FIT FOR MEMORIAL HOSPITAL AND THE MOUNT WASHINGTON VALLEY.”

THAT’S WHAT HOSPITAL PRESIDENT AND CEO SCOTT McKINNON SAYS ABOUT THE DECISION MADE BY MEMORIAL’S BOARD OF DIRECTORS WEDNESDAY TO PURSUE MEMBERSHIP WITH THE MAINEHEALTH SYSTEM.

McKINNON AND BOARD CHAIR GENE BERGOFFEN MADE THE ANNOUNCEMENT EARLY THURSDAY AFTERNOON LIVE ON THE STATIONS OF THE MOUNT WASHINGTON RADIO GROUP.

MAINEHEALTH IS A NOT-FOR-PROFIT HEALTH CARE SYSTEM BASED IN PORTLAND THAT INCLUDES MAINE MEDICAL CENTER AND 11 OTHER HOSPITALS AND HEALTH-RELATED ORGANIZATIONS.

UNDER THE NEW AFFILIATION, MAINEHEALTH WOULD BECOME THE PARENT ORGANIZATION OF MEMORIAL. McKINNON SAYS MEMBERSHIP WILL ALLOW THE HOSPITAL TO GAIN A STRATEGIC PARTNER THAT WILL IMPROVE THE LEVEL OF HEALTHCARE IN THE VALLEY.

BERGOFFEN SAYS MANY OF MEMORIAL’S PATIENTS ALREADY GO TO MAINE.

HE CITES MAINEHEALTH’S RESPECT FOR LOCAL GOVERNANCE AND ACTIVITY, WITH THE BOARD CONTINUING TO GOVERN AND McKINNON REMAINING IN CHARGE OF DAY-TO-DAY OPERATIONS. HE SAYS THE GOAL IS TO PROVIDE A SECURE FUTURE FOR THE COMMUNITIES THE HOSPITAL SERVES – AND FOR THE HOSPITAL’S DOCTORS AND EMPLOYEES.

McKINNON SAYS THE THOUGHT IS DO IT WHILE THE HOSPITAL IS STRONG FINANCIALLY SO THERE’S TIME TO PREPARE FOR THE FUTURE.

McKINNON SAYS THE VAST MAJORITY OF MEMORIAL’S OUTPATIENT REFERRALS –AND NEARLY 90 PERCENT OF ITS INPATIENT REFERRALS TO ANOTHER HEALTH FACILITY, GO TO A MAINEHEALTH ORGANIZATION, PRIMARILY MAINE MEDICAL CENTER.

WORKING OUT THE DETAILS OF THE MEMBERSHIP WILL TAKE ABOUT A YEAR – INCLUDING REVIEW AND APPROVAL BY THE NEW HAMPSHIRE ATTORNEY GENERAL – AND THE HOSPITAL WILL HOLD COMMUNITY INFORMATION MEETINGS TO OUTLINE THE PROPOSED PARTNERSHIP AND ANSWER QUESTIONS ABOUT IT.
