MOTORCYCLE VICTIMS STILL HOSPITALIZED

A SPOKESPERSON FOR MAINE MEDICAL CENTER IN PORTLAND SAYS TWO VICTIMS OF SATURDAY’S MOTORCYCLE CRASH IN CENTER CONWAY ARE STILL HOSPITALIZED THERE, AND ONE OF THEM IS IN CRITICAL CONDITION.

CONWAY POLICE SGT. RUSS McLAUCHLAN SAYS THE CRASH HAPPENED SHORTLY BEFORE 6 P.M. SATURDAY WHEN A 2012 NISSAN FRONTIER PICKUP TRUCK THAT WAS WESTBOUND ON ROUTE 302 TURNED LEFT INTO THE COBBLE POND FARMS PARKING LOT.

AS A RESULT, THE OPERATOR OF AN ONCOMING HARLEY DAVIDSON SOFTAIL FATBOY CRUISER MOTORCYCLE THAT WAS EASTBOUND ON ROUTE 302 – IDENTIFIED AS 39-YEAR-OLD MICHAEL E. GRAY OF BRUNSWICK, MAINE – LAID THE BIKE DOWN AND HE AND HIS FEMALE PASSENGER – IDENTIFIED AS 41-YEAR-OLD SHELLEY STURTEVANT OF LEWISTON, MAINE – WHO WERE NOT WEARING HELMETS – WERE EJECTED FROM THE BIKE THAT HIT THE PICKUP’S RIGHT REAR TIRE.

THE MOTORCYCLE RIDERS WERE KNOCKED UNCONSCIOUS WHILE THE TWO PEOPLE IN THE PICKUP, IDENTIFIED AS THE DRIVER, 31-YEAR-OLD DENNIS HARRIS OF FREEDOM, NEW HAMPSHIRE AND HIS FEMALE PASSENGER, 32-YEAR-OLD KELLIE TYLER OF ANSONIA, CONN., WHO WERE BOTH WEARING SEATBELTS, WERE NOT HURT.

CENTER CONWAY FIRE RESCUE AND AMBULANCE, CONWAY RESCUE AND CONWAY AMBULANCE RESPONDED, ALONG WITH POLICE. THE ROAD WAS PARTIALLY SHUT DOWN WHILE RESPONDERS WORKED AT THE SCENE.

THE MOTORCYCLE RIDERS WERE GIVEN FIRST AID AND TAKEN TO MEMORIAL HOSPITAL IN NORTH CONWAY, BEFORE BEING TRANSFERRED TO MAINE MEDICAL CENTER. A SPOKESPERSON THERE WEDNESDAY SAID GRAY WAS IN CRITICAL CONDITION AND STURTEVANT WAS IN FAIR CONDITION.

McLAUCHLAN SAYS HARRIS, THE DRIVER OF THE PICKUP, SAYS HE NEVER SAW THE MOTORCYCLE COMING BEFORE HE MADE THE TURN ACROSS THE EASTBOUND TRAVEL LANE.

ROAD CONDITIONS WERE CLEAR AND DRY AT THE TIME. CONWAY POLICE CONTINUE TO INVESTIGATE THE INCIDENT.
