MOULTONBOROUGH ESTABLISHES DRUG DROPOFF BOX

by Christian Mower on July 26, 2012

RESIDENTS OF MOULTONBOROUGH AND THE PUBLIC DON’T HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE NEXT NATIONAL PRESCRIPTION DRUG TAKE BACK DAY BECAUSE MOULTONBOROUGH HAS SET UP ITS OWN DRUG DROPOFF BOX AT ITS PUBLIC SAFETY BUILDING.

POLICE CHIEF LEONARD WETHERBEE SAYS THE OFFICES OF THE DRUG ENFORCEMENT ADMINISTRATION AND THE NEW HAMPSHIRE ATTORNEY GENERAL WERE VERY HELPFUL IN HELPING SET UP THE PROGRAM.

THE DROP BOX IS LOCATED IN THE BUILDING’S LOBBY AT 1035 WHITTIER HWY. – IT’S UNDER VIDEO SURVEILLANCE AND WITHIN DIRECT VIEW OF A DISPATCHER.

OFFICIALLY CALLED THE “MED RETURN DROP BOX” – WETHERBEE SAYS IT WILL BE EMPTIED ROUTINELY AND THE PROCESS WILL BE VIDEOTAPED AND SUPERVISED BY TWO PEOPLE TO ENSURE SECURITY AND SAFETY THROUGH DISPOSAL.

THE CHIEF STRESSES THE PROGRAM IS ANONYMOUS AND NO ONE WHO DROPS OFF DRUGS AT THE BOX WILL BE ASKED FOR IDENTIFICATION. THE BOX WILL NORMALLY BE ACCESSIBLE EACH DAY FROM 7 A.M. TO 7 P.M.

THE CHIEF SAYS HAVING THE DROP BOX MAKES IT CONVENIENT FOR PEOPLE IN THE REGION TO BRING IN THEIR UNWANTED OR EXPIRED PRESCRIPTION AND NON-PRESCRIPTION DRUGS WHEN THEY WANT TO, RATHER THAN HAVING TO REMEMBER THE DATES FOR THE NATIONAL PRESCRIPTION DRUG TAKE BACK DAYS.

WETHERBEE SAYS IT THERE ARE GOOD REASONS TO USE THE BOX, CITING STUDIES THAT SHOW THE MAJORITY OF ABUSED PRESCRIPTION DRUGS ARE OBTAINED FROM FAMILY AND FRIENDS, INCLUDING THE HOME MEDICINE CABINET.

HE SAYS HAVING A DROP OFF BOX ALSO MEANS DRUGS WON’T CONTAMINATE THE WATER SUPPLY BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN FLUSHED.

ALL SOLID AND LIQUID DOSAGE PHARMACEUTICAL PRODUCTS IN THEIR CONSUMER CONTAINERS WILL BE ACCEPTED. CONTAINERS WITH LIQUIDS SHOULD BE TIGHTLY CLOSED AND PLACED INSIDE A SEALED PLASTIC BAG TO PREVENT SPILLAGE. INTRAVENOUS SOLUTIONS, AEROSOLS, INHALERS, SYRINGES AND HYPODERMIC NEEDLES – ALSO REFERRED TO AS “MEDICAL SHARPS” – CAN’T BE ACCEPTED – BUT MOULTONBOROUGH RESIDENTS CAN DISPOSED OF THEM AT THE TRANSFER STATION. ILLEGAL DRUGS ARE NOT ACCEPTED.
