THE MAN WHO HAS HEADED SAU 9 FOR MORE THAN A DECADE WILL CONTINUE FOR AN ADDITIONAL TWO YEARS.

CONWAY SCHOOL BOARD CHAIR JANINE MCLAUCHLAN SAYS ONLY ONE MEMBER OF THE SAU BOARD OPPOSED EXTENDING DR. CARL NELSON’S CONTRACT AT A MEETING TUESDAY NIGHT – EVERYONE ELSE OF THE NEARLY TWO DOZEN PEOPLE PRESENT WAS IN FAVOR.

NELSON’S CONTRACT WAS DUE TO EXPIRE AT THE END OF THE CURRENT SCHOOL YEAR – WITH THE CONTRACT EXTENSION HE WILL NOW STAY ON UNTIL JUNE OF 2014.

MCLAUCHLAN SAYS AN EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE LOOKED INTO THE PROCESS OF HIRING A NEW SUPERINTENDENT AND WAS TOLD THE POOL OF POTENTIAL APPLICANTS IS SMALL AND THE MAJORITY OF SUPERINTENDENTS ARE STAYING PUT BECAUSE IN THIS ECONOMY THEY CAN’T AFFORD TO MOVE AROUND.

MCLAUCHLAN SAYS ONE MAJOR EVENT IT WILL BE NICE TO HAVE NELSON AROUND FOR IS THE TOWN OF MADISON’S STUDY OF POSSIBLY WITHDRAWING FROM SAU 13 TO RE-JOIN SAU 9.

MCLAUCHLAN SAYS NELSON HAS THE ABILITY TO TACKLE A PROBLEM IN A CALM, REASSURING  MANNER THAT GIVES BOARD MEMBERS CONFIDENCE THEY CAN GET THROUGH ANY CHALLENGE.
