GUESTS AT NEW HAMPSHIRE’S MOST VISITED MUSEUM – THE ONE AT THE TOP OF MOUNT WASHINGTON – NEW ENGLAND’S TALLEST PEAK – OPERATED BY NORTH CONWAY’S NON-PROFIT MOUNT WASHINGTON OBSERVATORY – WILL SOON GET TO ENJOY NEW, IMPROVED AND MORE REALISTIC EXHIBITS.

OBSERVATORY EXEC. DIRECTOR SCOT HENLEY UNVEILED PLANS THURSDAY FOR A COMPLETE REDESIGN AND RENOVATION OF THE SUMMIT MUSEUM – CALLED “EXTREME MOUNT WASHINGTON” – THAT WILL BE IN PLACE IN THE SPRING OF 2014 TO ACCOMMODATE THE MORE THAN 100,000 PEOPLE WHO VISIT THE MUSEUM EVERY YEAR.

THE NEARLY 3,000 SQUARE FOOT MUSEUM WILL BE STRIPPED TO THE STUDS AND NEW INTERACTIVE SENSORY EXHIBITS WILL BE INSTALLED HENLEY SAYS WILL IMPRESS VISITORS WITH THE AWE AND WONDER OF THE MOUNTAIN’S WINTER SEASON.

ANOTHER HIGHLIGHT WILL BE NEW HIGH DEFINITION WINTER VIDEO SHOT BY DOCUMENTARIAN TOM GUILMETTE THAT WILL SHOW TIME LAPSE GROWTH OF RIME ICE – AND THE DAILY WORK OF OBSERVATORY SUMMIT METEOROLOGISTS AS THEY BRAVE THE ELEMENTS TO RECORD THE WORLD’S WORST WEATHER.

VISITORS WILL ALSO BE ABLE TO SEE THE ACTUAL INSTRUMENT – CALLED AN ANEMOMETER – USED TO MEASURE THE WORLD’S RECORD-SETTING HIGH WIND SPEED IN APRIL OF 1934.

HENLEY SAYS THE REDESIGN – BEING LED BY A MASS.- BASED MUSEUM DESIGN FIRM – IS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT ENHANCEMENT OF THE OBSERVATORY’S EDUCATION WORK SINCE THE WEATHER DISCOVERY CENTER IN NORTH CONWAY OPENED IN 1999.

SUMMIT VISITORS WILL HAVE FREE ACCESS TO THE EXHIBITS.

HENLEY SAYS JUST MORE THAN $100,000 FOR THE PROJECT NEEDS TO BE RAISED TO REACH THE GOAL OF $825,000. MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROJECT CAN BE VIEWED ONLINE AT www.extreme.mountwashington.org. TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE OBSERVATORY AND ITS WORK, SEE THE WEBSITE AT www.mountwashington.org.
