by Christian Mower on May 23, 2012

THE TREASURER OF THE OSSIPEE CHILDREN’S FUND SAYS SHE’S “THRILLED” THE FUND HAS BEEN AWARDED A $5,000 GRANT FROM THE NEW HAMPSHIRE ELECTRIC CO-OP FOUNDATION.

CECILY CLARK SAYS THE MONEY WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE TO LOW INCOME FAMILIES – A GOOD PERCENTAGE OF THEM HEADED BY SINGLE PARENTS – IN OSSIPEE, MADISON, EFFINGHAM AND FREEDOM.

THE CHILDREN’S FUND IS DESIGNED TO HELP ENHANCE THE LIVES OF YOUNG PEOPLE WHILE HELPING THEM ACQUIRE SKILLS, INCREASE THEIR SELF-ESTEEM AND IMPROVE THEIR GRADES.

THE MONEY IS USED TO PROVIDE PRE-SCHOOL CHILDCARE TO EXPERIENCES IN LESS EXPENSIVE ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS, INCLUDING MUSIC, DANCE AND SWIM LESSONS, DRIVER EDUCATION, SUMMER CAMPS, ADAPTIVE RIDING AND SKIING PROGRAMS AND AFTER SCHOOL HOMEWORK CLUBS.

CLARK SAYS THE GRANT MONEY FROM THE CO-OP IS ESPECIALLY WELCOME AND MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE BECAUSE OF CUTBACKS IN FUNDING FROM THE STATE.

CO-OP SPOKESMAN SETH WHEELER SAYS THE FOUNDATION IS FUNDED BY MEMBERS OF THE CO-OP WHOSE MONTHLY ELECTRIC BILLS ARE ROUNDED UP TO THE NEXT DOLLAR, WITH THE PROCEEDS GOING TO THE FOUNDATION.

THE CHILDREN’S FUND WAS ESTABLISHED MORE THAN TWO DECADES AGO AND PAID OUT ITS MILLIONTH DOLLAR EARLIER THIS YEAR.

THE FUND PAYS FOR THE PROGRAMS DIRECTLY.

APPLICATIONS FOR IT ARE AVAILABLE AT SCHOOLS AND RECREATION CENTERS IN THE FOUR TOWNS SERVED BY THE PROGRAM.
