PIRATES BEAT WRITER VISITS VALLEY

by Gair on June 20, 2013

A REPORTER FOR THE PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE WHO COVERS THE PITTSBURGH PIRATES SAYS HE WAS STRUCK WITH HOW BEAUTIFUL CONWAY IS WHEN HE VISITED JUNE 15-16, 2013 TO RESEARCH A STORY ABOUT CONWAY NATIVE AND PIRATES PITCHER JEFF LOCKE.

MIKE SANSERINO SAYS HE HAD A CHANCE TO MEET SOME FOLKS HERE WHO PLAYED A MAJOR ROLE IN LOCKE’S DEVELOPMENT AS A PITCHER AND AS A MAN – AND HE WAS STRUCK BY HOW CONNECTED THEY STILL ARE TO LOCKE.

ONE OF THEM WAS LLOYD JONES, SPORTS AND EDUCATION WRITER FOR THE CONWAY DAILY SUN, WHO HELPED LOCKE TIE HIS TIE BEFORE HE ATTENDED A SPORTS BANQUET.

SANSERINO SAYS LOCKE IS GETTING MORE RESPECT EVERY DAY, ESPECIALLY AS THE PIRATES DEAL WITH INJURIES TO THEIR STARTING PITCHERS.

SANSERINO SAYS LOCKE CONTINUES TO SURPRISE PEOPLE IN PITTSBURGH, GOING FROM THE START OF THE SEASON WHERE IT WAS UNCLEAR IF HE WOULD EVEN GET A SPOT IN THE STARTING ROTATION – OR BE ABLE TO STAY THERE – TO NOW, WHERE PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT HIM AS A POSSIBLE ALL-STAR.

HE SAYS IT’S FUN TO WATCH LOCKE – THAT HIS PITCH CONTROL HAS IMPROVED – AND THAT HE’S ALSO BEEN HELPED BY HIS DEVELOPMENT OF HIS SECONDARY PITCHES.

SANSERINO ALSO TALKED TO LOCKE’S PARENTS AND SOME OF HIS HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL TEAMMATES DURING HIS QUICK VISIT.

BESIDE SHARING A COMMON PRIDE IN LOCKE’S ACCOMPLISHMENTS, THE VALLEY AREA AND PITTSBURGH ALSO SHARE A VISUAL ATTRACTION CALLED MOUNT WASHINGTON – IN THE VALLEY, IT’S THE NORTHEAST’S TALLEST MOUNTAIN – IN PITTSBURGH, IT’S A HILL BY THE RIVER THAT HAS A TRAM ON IT.

SANSERINO EXPECTS HIS STORY ABOUT LOCKE AND HIS ROOTS IN THE VALLEY TO BE PUBLISHED SOON IN THE POST-GAZETTE, POSSIBLY THIS WEEKEND.
