PROPOSED CONWAY SCHOOL DISTRICT BUDGET REDUCED BY AT LEAST 601K

by Christian Mower on December 9, 2011

THE AMOUNT OF THE PROPOSED CONWAY SCHOOL DISTRICT BUDGET FOR NEXT YEAR WILL BE AT LEAST $601,000 LESS THAN THIS YEAR’S BUDGET, PRIMARILY DUE TO A BOND IN THAT AMOUNT THAT IS BEING RETIRED.

INCLUDING ANTICIPATED GRANT MONEY, SAU 9 SUPT. DR. CARL NELSON IS PROPOSING AN AMOUNT OF JUST MORE THAN $32,421,000 FOR THE 2012-2013 SCHOOL YEAR.

NELSON PRESENTED HIS PROPOSED BUDGET TO THE CONWAY SCHOOL BOARD’S BUDGET COMMITTEE MONDAY – WHICH ADDED BACK A PART-TIME HALL MONITOR POSITION – SO EXCLUDING THE RETIRED BOND AMOUNT, THE NEW BUDGET SAVES ABOUT $40,000.

IN ADDITION TO THE HALL MONITOR POSITION, NELSON SAYS THERE WERE THREE OTHER ITEMS BEING CONSIDERED, INCLUDING AN ADDITIONAL TEACHER AT PINE TREE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, A FOURTH “TEAM” AT KENNETT MIDDLE SCHOOL AND A CAREER TECHNICAL GUIDANCE COUNSELOR POSITION THAT THE BOARD HAS REQUESTED MORE INFORMATION ON.

HEALTH CARE PREMIUMS FOR THOSE ON THE SCHOOL DISTRICT’S PLAN WILL GO UP ABOUT 5 POINT SIX PERCENT.

PENDING SCHOOL BOARD APPROVAL, NELSON HOPES TO PRESENT THE BUDGET TO THE CONWAY MUNICIPAL BUDGET COMMITTEE WEDNESDAY.

BUDGET COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN DAVE SORDI SAYS HIS COMMITTEE WILL HAVE TWO PUBLIC SESSIONS IN JANUARY WITH THE SCHOOL BOARD TO REVIEW THE PROPOSED BUDGET – AND ANOTHER PUBLIC HEARING WILL BE HELD IN MID-FEBRUARY BEFORE THE COMMITTEE VOTES ON IT.

IT WILL THEN GO TO THE DELIBERATIVE SESSION OF TOWN MEETING AND BE SUBJECT TO VOTERS’ APPROVAL.

NELSON SAYS THE SAU 9 SCHOOL BOARD ADOPTED ITS OWN BUDGET THURSDAY NIGHT AND APPROVED THE MADISON SAU 13 WITHDRAWAL PLAN – THE PLAN WILL NOW GO TO THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION FOR ITS COMMENT.
