SANDWICH BRUSHFIRE STARTED BY BACKFIRING MOWER

by Christian Mower on April 17, 2012

A SANDWICH FIRE CHIEF SAYS A BRUSHFIRE STARTED BY A LAWN MOWER IN SANDWICH BURNED ABOUT AN ACRE TUESDAY.

ASST. CHIEF MIKE CANFIELD SAYS HIS DEPARTMENT AND MEREDITH EMS RESPONDED TO 434 NORTH SANDWICH ROAD ABOUT 11:30 A.M. AND QUICKLY WENT TO A FIRST ALARM.

THAT BROUGHT HELP FROM FIREFIGHTERS IN CENTER HARBOR, HOLDERNESS, MOULTONBOROUGH, MEREDITH AND TAMWORTH.

CANFIELD SAYS THE FIRE WAS STARTED BY THE MOWER BACKFIRING.

THE CHIEF SAYS IT JUST SHOWS HOW DRY THE GROUND IS AND THAT ANOTHER RECENT FIRE WAS STARTED BY A LAWN MOWER HITTING A ROCK THAT SPARKED.

THE FIRE STARTED ON THE GRASSY AREA AND SPREAD INTO SOME WOODS. THE CHIEF SAYS THERE WERE SOME HOUSES AND BOATS IN THE AREA BUT THEY WERE NOT HEAVILY DAMAGED.

ABOUT 30 FIREFIGHTERS WERE AT THE SCENE. NO ONE WAS HURT.

LIKE OTHER AREAS OF NEW HAMPSHIRE, THE TOWN OF SANDWICH WAS UNDER A RED FLAG WARNING TUESDAY AND NO FIRE PERMITS WERE BEING ISSUED BECAUSE OF THE DANGEROUS COMBINATION OF LOW HUMIDITY, GUSTY WINDS AND DRY GROUND COVER.
