Sherman Farm Asks for Help

by Christian Mower on September 13, 2013

THE FOLKS AT SHERMAN FARM AT 2679 EAST CONWAY RD. ARE ASKING FOR HELP IN GETTING READY FOR SATURDAY MORNING’S OPENING (SEPT. 14, 2013) OF THE POPULAR CORNFIELD MAIZE.

PARTS OF THE FARM’S 12-ACRE MAIZE WERE BADLY DAMAGED WEDNESDAY NIGHT BY STRONG WINDS FROM THUNDERSTORMS THAT ROLLED THROUGH THE VALLEY AND WESTERN MAINE.

MICHELE DUTTON –THE GRANDDAUGHTER OF THE FARM’S PATRIARCH, THE LATE AL SHERMAN, SAYS THE NEED NOW IS FOR PEOPLE TO CARRY STAKES AND NETTING, HOLD UP CORN STALKS, “HANDS THAT AREN’T AFRAID TO GET DIRTY AND HANDS TO HOLD OURS WHILE WE TRY TO GET OUR MAZE BACK IN SHAPE FOR THE GRAND OPENING.”

THE FARM’S FACE BOOK PAGE SAYS “THIS YEAR’S MAZE IS ABOUT SO MUCH MORE THAN SHERMAN FARM PUTTING ON ITS YEARLY SHOW. IT’S ABOUT STANDING UP TO CANCER AND HELPING FAMILIES HERE IN THE VALLEY AND ALL OVER MAINE AND NEW HAMPSHIRE WHO HAVE BEEN AFFECTED BY THIS HORRIBLE DISEASE. IT’S ABOUT GIVING HOPE BACK TO PEOPLE WHO NEED A HELPING HAND. SO STAND UP WITH US TODAY AND HELP US TO HELP OTHERS.”

THE THEME OF THIS YEAR’S MAIZE – 12 ACRES OF CORN WITH AN ELABORATE PATH CARVED THROUGH IT – IS “STAND UP TO CANCER.” PROCEEDS FROM VARIOUS SPECIAL EVENTS AT THE MAIZE WILL BENEFIT THE VALLEY-BASED JEN’S FRIENDS CANCER FOUNDATION AND THE LEWISTON, MAINE BASED PATRICK DEMPSEY CENTER FOR CANCER HOPE AND HEALING.

DUTTON SAYS ANYONE IS WELCOME TO STOP BY FRIDAY AFTERNOON TO HELP AT THE FARM. TOOLS WILL BE PROVIDED BUT STURDY WORK SHOES AND GLOVES ARE RECOMMENDED. AND SHE SAYS A NEIGHBOR ACROSS THE STREET ON EAST CONWAY RD. CAN USE SOME HELP AFTER THE STORM BROUGHT EIGHT TREES DOWN ON HIS PROPERTY, SOME OF THEM HITTING HIS HOUSE.

DUTTON SAYS THE MAIZE WILL OPEN FOR THE SEASON SATURDAY AT 10 A.M. SATURDAY IS “WEAR PURPLE DAY” TO SUPPORT CANCER AWARENESS AND IF YOU WEAR PURPLE WHILE VISITING THE MAIZE, ONE DOLLAR OF YOUR ADMISSION WILL GO TO JEN’S FRIENDS AND THE DEMPSEY CENTER.

THE MOUNT WASHINGTON RADIO GROUP IS A LONGTIME SPONSOR OF THE MAIZE.

CALL THE FARM IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS AT (603) 939-2412. INFORMATION ABOUT THE MAIZE CAN ALSO BE FOUND ON THE FARM’S FACEBOOK PAGE AND AT www.shermanfarmnh.com.
