SMITH GETS CAREER BEST WORLD CUP FINISH IN SWITZERLAND

NORTH CONWAY’S OLYMPIAN – AND U.S. ALPINE SKI TEAM MEMBER LEANNE SMITH – GOT HER CAREER BEST WORLD CUP FINISH THIS WEEKEND IN ST. MORITZ, SWITZERLAND – MOVING HER INTO THE TOP 20 IN DOWNHILL STANDINGS.

U.S. SKI TEAM SPOKESMAN DOUG HANEY SAYS SMITH FINISHED 7TH IN THE DOWNHILL SATURDAY. HER TEAMMATE JULIA MANCUSO PLACED FIFTH AND TEAMMATE AND OLYMPIC DOWNHILL CHAMPION LINDSEY VONN WON THE RACE BY 1.42 SECONDS, HER CAREER 49TH AUDI FIS ALPINE WORLD CUP WIN.

SMITH SAYS “I’M DEFINITELY HAPPY ABOUT HOW I’M SKIING RIGHT NOW. I NEEDED A DOWNHILL RESULT SO I’M REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT WEEKEND AND HOPEFULLY I CAN CONTINUE THIS LITTLE STREAK OF BETTER SKIING THAT I’M ON. I’M REALLY STARTING TO FEEL AND LEARN FROM DAY TO DAY WHAT I NEED TO DO BETTER AND GETTING A BIT MORE EXPERIENCE UNDER MY BELT.”

VONN PRAISES SMITH AND HER TEAMMATES, SAYING “LEANNE IS SKIING EXTREMELY WELL AND I’M REALLY HAPPY FOR HER… EVERYONE IS SKIING REALLY WELL. AS A TEAM, WE’RE ON A ROLL AND IT’S FUN TO SEE ALL THE GIRLS SO EXCITED AND SKIING SO WELL. EVERY DAY ALL OF THE GIRLS ON THIS TEAM HAVE A CHANCE TO BE ON THE PODIUM.”

SMITH SKIED AT CRANMORE MOUNTAIN IN NORTH CONWAY WHEN SHE WAS SIX YEARS OLD – SHE WAS A STUDENT AT KENNETT HIGH SCHOOL IN CONWAY – AND SKIED WITH THE MOUNT WASHINGTON VALLEY SKI TEAM BEFORE BECOMING A DOUBLE NOR-AM CHAMPION, WHICH LED TO THE WORLD CUP CIRCUIT AND THE U.S. SKI TEAM.

SMITH WENT FROM BEING 75TH IN WORLD CUP OVERALL POINTS IN 2010 TO BEING RANKED 30TH IN 2011.
