STARTING POINT MARKS SOLIDARITY DAY, NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

by Christian Mower on October 28, 2011

THE NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT HAS SERVED VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC AND SEXUAL VIOLENCE IN THE VALLEY AREA FOR 30 YEARS IS WRAPPING UP ITS OBSERVANCE OF NATIONAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH.

SUZETTE INDELICATO – THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF STARTING POINT – SAYS IT WAS WONDERFUL TO SEE ALL THE PURPLE RIBBONS AROUND CARROLL COUNTY THURSDAY – SOME DISPLAYED BY LOCAL BUSINESSES – CELEBRATING THE ORGANIZATION’S 2ND ANNUAL DAY OF SOLIDARITY TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.

INDELICATO SAYS JUST MORE THAN 100 RIBBONS WERE DISTRIBUTED LAST YEAR – THIS YEAR NEARLY 500 WERE GIVEN OUT. THE RIBBONS ARE MEANT TO HONOR THE MANY VICTIMS OF VIOLENCE WHO HAVE SURVIVED ABUSE – AND THOSE WHO DID NOT.

STARTING POINT HELD ITS ANNUAL CELEBRATION THURSDAY NIGHT WITH VOLUNTEERS, LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS AND SOCIAL SERVICE AGENCIES THAT WORK WITH IT TO ACKNOWLEDGE THEIR CONTINUING EFFORTS TO IMPROVE THE LIVES OF VICTIMS.

INDELICATO SAYS HER ORGANIZATION SERVES ABOUT 700 INDIVIDUALS EACH YEAR – AND ALTHOUGH THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE BEING HELPED ISN’T GOING UP – THE LENGTH OF TIME THEY SPEND WITH STARTING POINT AND THE AMOUNT OF SERVICES THEY ARE USING HAVE INCREASED.

THAT MEANS THERE’S ALSO ALWAYS A NEED FOR MORE WOMEN AND MEN TO JOIN STARTING POINT AS VOLUNTEERS. INDELICATO SAYS VOLUNTEERS ARE CRUCIAL TO STARTING POINT IN THAT THEY ALLOW IT TO PROVIDE 24-HOUR SERVICE 7 DAYS A WEEK.

VOLUNTEERS ARE REQUIRED TO GO THROUGH 30 HOURS OF TRAINING. THE NEXT TRAINING SESSION STARTS WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 2.
