Hard to believe it’s been 20 years this past Friday, since August 27, 1990, when SRV tragically died in a helicoter crash after a concert at Alpine Valley in East Troy, Wisconsin.
It’s one of those “where were you when” moments in life. Like JFK, MLK, RFK or John Lennon. I was pumping gas at Roy’s Sunoco and heard the news on WMWV! I hung a picture of SRV from the paper on the wall of the office.
Fortunately, I saw SRV once, Nov. 15, 1985, at the Civic Center in Portland . This was the tour to support “Soul To Soul”. The 1st tour with Reese Wynans on keyboards, joining Tommy Shannon & Chris Layton as a member of Double Trouble. The Fabulous Thunderbirds opened (with Stevie Ray’s big brother Jimmy). Both acts kicked butt as I remember!
Here’s a pretty cool site to check out. Also a good SRV info site.
There are “new” blues from 1973, when SRV was a member of Marc Benno & The Nightcrawlers, from the CD “Crawlin”! Recorded in 1973, just released for the 1st time on Blue Skunk Records.
Thank you for all you thoughts, video links & suggestions. It was fun to remember SRV & his music!
