CONWAY POLICE SAY AT LEAST TWO PEOPLE WERE TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON AFTER A REAR-END COLLISION ON EAST MAIN ST. NEAR STRITCH RD. IN CONWAY.

LT. CHRIS PERLEY SAYS IT HAPPENED SHORTLY AFTER ONE P.M.

PERLEY SAYS A SMALL BLACK VW BEING DRIVEN BY CHRISTIAN JAMES DENNEHY OF BUTTE, MONTANA WAS WESTBOUND AND HAD STOPPED ON EAST MAIN ST. TO TURN LEFT ONTO STRITCH RD. WHEN THE CAR WAS REAR-ENDED BY 67-YEAR-OLD RITA H. WHITTUM OF LOON MOUNTAIN LANE IN REDSTONE, WHO WAS DRIVING A 2004 CHEVY TRACKER.

THE FORCE OF THE IMPACT SPUN THE VW AROUND.

WHITTUM REPORTEDLY TOLD POLICE SHE HAD BEEN DISTRACTED AND LOOKED DOWN TO TURN THE KNOB FOR HER WINDSHIELD WIPER WHEN SHE CRASHED INTO THE VW. SHE APPARENTLY WAS NOT HURT AND DID NOT REQUIRE HOSPITALIZATION.

CENTER CONWAY FIRE RESCUE AND CONWAY AMBULANCE RESPONDED AND THE ROAD WAS CLOSED NEAR THE SCENE FOR ABOUT A HALF HOUR.

PERLEY SAYS DENNEHY AND HIS PASSENGER JOSEF POLIVKA – ALSO OF MONTANA – WERE UP AND WALKING AROUND AFTER THE CRASH BUT A SHORT TIME LATER THE TWO MEN – BOTH IN THEIR TWENTIES – WERE REPORTEDLY TAKEN TO MEMORIAL HOSPITAL IN NORTH CONWAY, WITH ONE COMPLAINING OF NECK AND BACK PAIN AND THE OTHER OF HEAD AND SHOULDER PAIN.

IT’S BELIEVED BOTH MEN WERE WEARING THEIR SEAT BELTS.

BOTH CARS WERE TOWED FROM THE SCENE AND THE ROAD RE-OPENED ABOUT 1:45 P.M.
