CRANMORE MOUNTAIN RESORT IN NORTH CONWAY IS REMEMBERING A FORMER OWNER AND MANAGER OF THE RESORT WHO HAS DIED.

MARKETING DIRECTOR KATHY BENNETT SAYS THE RESORT HAS GOTTEN CONFIRMATION FROM HERBERT SCHNEIDER’S FAMILY OF HIS PASSING.

BORN IN MAY OF 1920, SCHNEIDER WAS 92.

CRANMORE PRESIDENT AND GENERAL MANAGER BEN WILCOX CALLS HERBERT SCHNEIDER A GREAT MAN AND SAYS THE NEWS OF HIS DEATH IS A SAD DAY THAT EXTENDS BEYOND THE CRANMORE FAMILY AND THE MOUNT WASHINGTON VALLEY INTO THE SKI INDUSTRY.

HE CITES SCHNEIDER FOR CARRYING ON THE LEGACY OF THE HANNES SCHNEIDER SKI SCHOOL, INTEGRATING SNOWMAKING AND MODERN DAY GROOMING TECHNIQUES AND STARTING AND SUPPORTING YOUNG SKIER PROGRAMS THROUGH THE EASTERN SLOPE SKI CLUB.

WILCOX SAYS THE MOUNTAIN MEISTER PROGRAM STARTED UNDER SCHNEIDER, AS DID THE VOLVO TENNIS TOURNAMENT, AN EVENT WILCOX SAYS “REALLY PUT THE VALLEY ON THE MAP.”

WILCOX SAYS SCHNEIDER WAS ALSO VERY WELCOMING TO HIM.

SCHNEIDER WAS CALLED “ZIP” AND WILCOX SAYS CRANMORE’S PUB AND A TRAIL ARE NAMED IN HIS HONOR.

HERBERT SCHNEIDER WAS THE SON OF THE LATE HANNES SCHNEIDER, WHO RAN A SKI SCHOOL IN AUSTRIA BEFORE ESCAPING FROM NAZI EUROPE AND BRINGING HIS TEACHING SKILLS TO NORTH CONWAY.

NEW ENGLAND SKI MUSEUM EXEC. DIRECTOR JEFF LEICH CALLS HERBERT SCHNEIDER AN ATHLETE, DECORATED AMERICAN SOLDIER – (SCHNEIDER SERVED IN THE U.S. ARMY’S FAMED 10TH MOUNTAIN DIVISION) – SKI TEACHER AND SKI AREA OWNER WHO WAS A LINK TO THE INVENTION OF THE MOUNTAIN RESORT INDUSTRY.

LEICH SAYS “HERBERT SPENT HIS LIFE TEACHING THOUSANDS TO TURN SNOW, GRAVITY AND SPEED INTO A MASTERY OF SKIING, BRINGING WITH IT MEANING, ELATION AND BONDS WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS.”
