UNIQUE MOOSE DISPLAY AT FRYEBURG FAIR

by Christian Mower on September 27, 2013

THE MAINE DEPARTMENT OF INLAND FISHERIES AND WILDLIFE AND NEW HAMPSHIRE FISH AND GAME ARE PRESENTING A UNIQUE EXHIBIT AT MAINE’S FRYEBURG AFFAIR – NEW HAMPSHIRE’S “FOREVER LOCKED” AND MAINE’S “THE FINAL CHARGE” DISPLAYS TOGETHER FOR THE FIRST TIME – THE ONLY DISPLAYS IN THE U.S. THAT SHOW TWO FULL-SIZE BATTLING BULL MOOSE LOCKED TOGETHER AT THE ANTLERS.

BASED ON REAL INCIDENTS IN NEW HAMPSHIRE AND MAINE, GRAY MAINE BASED TAXIDERMIST MARK DUFRESNE USED THE ACTUAL ANTLERS AND JAWS OF THE ROUGHLY 900 POUND MOOSE THAT ENGAGED IN BATTLE AND DIED WITH THEIR ANTLERS STILL LOCKED.

DUFRESNE CREATED “FOREVER LOCKED,” THE BATTLING BULL MOOSE OF FOWLERTOWN DISPLAY AFTER THE REMAINS OF THE TWO MOOSE WERE DISCOVERED IN 2003 IN SPRINGFIELD, NEW HAMPSHIRE.

THE MAINE DISPLAY, CALLED “THE FINAL CHARGE,” WAS BUILT WITH REMAINS DISCOVERED IN NEW SWEDEN, MAINE IN 2006 AFTER TWO BULL MOOSE LOCKED ANTLERS AND DIED TOGETHER IN A SWAMP AFTER A BATTLE IN THE FALL.

MAINE IFW SPOKESMAN DOUG RAFFERTY SAYS BULL MOOSE FIGHT DURING THE RUTTING PERIOD WITH RECEPTIVE COWS IN THE AREA BUT THEY RARELY BECOME LOCKED TOGETHER PERMANENTLY.

THE 163RD RUNNING OF MAINE’S BLUE RIBBON CLASSIC STARTS SUNDAY IN FRYEBURG. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT IT, SEE THE WEBSITE AT www.fryeburgfair.org.
