VALLEY DOCTOR AT WORLD CUP

by Christian Mower on January 2, 2014

CONWAY OLYMPIAN LEANNE SMITH WILL GET SOME DIRECT SUPPORT FROM HER HOMETOWN HOSPITAL THIS WEEKEND AS SHE COMPETES IN WORLD CUP RACES IN ITALY.

THAT’S BECAUSE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL’S SPORTS MEDICINE SPECIALIST – DR. JAMES GLAZER – WILL BE IN SNOWY BORMIO TO WATCH OVER SMITH AND HER TEAMMATES ON THE U.S. SKI TEAM.

GLAZER – A SKIER HIMSELF – IS A MEMBER OF A MEDICAL POOL – ONE OF MORE THAN A DOZEN ORTHOPEDISTS FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY WHO SUPPORT THE U.S. SKI TEAM AT HIGH LEVEL EVENTS. GLAZER SAYS HE NORMALLY ATTENDS THE MEN’S EVENTS – THIS WEEKEND IS UNUSUAL IN THAT BOTH THE WOMEN’S AND MEN’S TEAMS WILL SKI AT THE SAME PLACE.

THE RACES WERE ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED IN CROATIA BUT BECAUSE OF LACK OF SNOW THERE THEY’VE BEEN SHIFTED TO THE ALPS IN NORTHERN ITALY.

GLAZER VOLUNTEERS HIS SPECIALIZED SKILLS TO KEEP THE ATHLETES SAFE – AND PAYS FOR HIS FLIGHTS AND HOTELS SO SKI TEAM MONEY CAN BE USED TO SUPPORT SOME OF THE YOUNG ATHLETES COMING UP.

GLAZER SAYS HE HAS WORKED WITH OLYMPIAN BODE MILLER OF FRANCONIA AND HIS TEAMMATE TED LIGETY – AND HE HOPES TO MEET SMITH DURING HIS TRIP.

GLAZER WILL STAY AT THE SAME HOTEL AS THE ATHLETES, ATTENDING TEAM MEETINGS AND FUNCTIONS WITH THEM. AND DURING THE DAY, HE WILL CARRY A RADIO AND BACKPACK WITH SPECIAL EQUIPMENT WHILE HE SKIES ON THE SLOPES AND ATTENDS TO ANY ATHLETE WHO MAY NEED HELP.

THE CURRENT SCHEDULE CALLS FOR THE WOMEN TO RACE SUNDAY JAN. 5, 2014 – FOLLOWED BY THE MEN ON MONDAY.
