VALLEY MAN LEADS RELIEF EFFORT FOR VICTIMS OF SANDY

by Christian Mower on November 5, 2012

A VALLEY AREA RESIDENT WHO FORMERLY LIVED IN NEW YORK CITY IS LAUNCHING A GRASSROOTS RELIEF EFFORT TO HELP RESIDENTS IN THE HARD HIT BOROUGH OF QUEENS, NEW YORK.

GABE FLANDERS OF EATON USED TO LIVE NEAR ROCKAWAY, QUEENS. NOW HE IS COORDINATING A RAPID RESPONSE EFFORT WITH FRIENDS WHO STILL LIVE THERE TO PROVIDE SUPPLIES TO NEIGHBORHOODS THAT WERE DEVASTATED BY HURRICANE SANDY.

FLANDERS SAYS HE’S LEARNED THERE WERE GAPS IN AID BEING DELIVERED TO ROCKAWAY AND HE’S TRYING TO GET SUPPLIES TO RESIDENTS THERE BEFORE IT GETS COLD.

HE’S TOLD IT MAY BE SOME TIME UNTIL POWER CAN BE RESTORED TO THE NEIGHBORHOODS OF ROCKAWAY, WHICH ARE CLOSE TO JOHN F. KENNEDY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT.

FLANDERS HAS RENTED A TRUCK THAT HE INTENDS TO DRIVE TO NEW YORK CITY TUESDAY. HE’S REQUESTING DONATIONS TO FILL THE TRUCK – AND HELP DEFRAY TRIP COSTS. HE SAYS A LOT OF CLOTHING HAS ALREADY BEEN DONATED SO THERE’S NOT MUCH OF A NEED FOR THAT.

THERE IS A NEED FOR BATTERIES, FLASHLIGHTS – AND CLEANUP SUPPLIES LIKE BROOMS, BLEACH, GARBAGE BAGS, GLOVES AND LIGHTS. FLANDERS IS TAKING DOWN AT LEAST ONE GENERATOR.

FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS WILL ALSO BE ACCEPTED. FLANDERS INTENDS TO CONNECT WITH OCCUPY SANDY WORKERS ALREADY ON THE GROUND IN ROCKAWAY.

DONATIONS CAN BE DELIVERED TO 662 KEARSARGE RD. IN NORTH CONWAY, TWO DOORS NORTH OF THE KEARSARGE POST OFFICE.

FLANDERS WILL START HIS SOLO DRIVE SOUTH TUESDAY MORNING AND MAKE A PICK UP STOP IN PORTSMOUTH BEFORE ARRIVING IN NEW YORK LATE TUESDAY AFTERNOON OR EVENING. HE PLANS TO UNLOAD IMMEDIATELY AND DRIVE BACK TO NORTH CONWAY WEDNESDAY.

FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE EFFORT, CALL FLANDERS AT (603) 986-5275 OR SEE THE FACEBOOK PAGE AT “GRANITE STATE FOR NYC SANDY RELIEF.”
